So...

I wanted to post this when the club site was up because this will be a progress thread (yes.... another one...)



I spent a bit of money and bought a bit of fiberglass and associated stuff.

(30 feet by 52in roll matt 4oz, 30 yard roll of 2in strip, a cubic yard of stretchable cloth, and a couple yards of the heavy stuff) and i'll buy 3 times that much if I need to.. its very reasonable..


So.. what am I going to do?

Im going to make a stock 951 bumper mold, and from that, i'll make a thin bumper that I will cut and reshape to fit the 914 perfectly. then from that, I'll make another mold for the final product.

Havent quite figured out price yet. Probably $250 when all is said and done.. and the mold is nice.. maybe less... Depending on how much work is involved...



But im also going to make a hood exhaust for the 914 for radiator cars... Should look very slick.. No big open hood.. Thats down the line, but it should be a fiberglass version...

This is all assuming that everything goes like I think it will.

No mass production or what not.. Just 3 or 4.. maybe more if theres intrest...

It seems to me that the long oval slots for the parking lights make the 914 headlight openings look small. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif)

I like it! That's a lot of fiberglass work! All those slots add a lot of difficulty to the molds How much did the 951 bumper cost? It might be more cost/time efficient to modify the bumper first and then make just the one mold of the finished product. Good luck and wear gloves! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Dad has 2 944 turbo's...

I'll use one of the bumpers to make a mold from... He says as long as he gets a f/g bumper out of it, he's cool.

Mike, I know. Im considering taking them out. but I like the big one for a brake vent.

I wanted to start stock first and modify till I like it later..

I too think you'd save a lot of time by simply modifying the existing f'glass 951 bumper from which to take a mold. Cut, re-form, patch, bondo, sand, seal, polish, mold release and make the reverse (mold). Pay attention to allow for draft, though from what I see this shouldn't be a big issue. Good luck, and keep us posted on your progress.

I dont have a fiberglass 951 bumper.

But thanks anyways!

I figure for the cost of a 951 f/g bumper, I could have a lot of fiberglass, resin, mold release, and maybe a vaccum setup...

I think these would sell like hotcakes! Since I posted earlier this year about fitting my 914 with a 951 bumper, I've had lots of people asking about my progress and where to get a bumper to work with.

My progress is almost negative at this point but should kick in next month. I regret not taking advantage of a dead lawn in the winter months.

Not a big fan of the way he molded in his headlights but its a mighty fine job of fitting the 951 front end.

I definately agree that he did a good job on molding.

But the main distraction I have towards anything currently done is how FAR the bumper is from the hood. Notice the 6+ inches between the front of the hood and the front of the bumper?
That is now how a 914 is... the front end of a 914 is suposed to be sleek and small.

Notice the second picture I posted? Thats about 3 inches.. Very nice and clean, sucked up to the 914.. like its SUPOSED to be there...

I will cut the middle, and fold the two ends of the bumper in towards each other to make the fit perfect. so there is no 8 inches of (IMG:style_emoticons/default/stromberg.gif)

Havent decided.

I think I'll do both.. IMHO a leading lip is important. I think I'll get a naked shell hood and experiment.

Pantyhose... lol... Only you...

Would you be interested in a hood? Im thinking 150 for the hood (maybe more.. lol).. Or maybe i'll just sell the "inserts" that you could cut in your hood and f/g in.

This thread is to guage intrest and see if there are any market for any of these items (stock rear decklids and stock front hoods I know... but custom stuff is another matter..)

I plan on making my own someday.... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) I think as far as guaging an interest in your work, its gonna be tough... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool_shades.gif) Body kits seem like they are unique to ones taste...love em or hate em, so it would be hard to say if there would be an interest, but I am sure you would sell at least 3.

In 1992 I bought a 944 Turbo bumper from Porschaus, Inc. from Las Vegas, NV. This bumper was designed for the 914. I have had this bumper installed on my 914 for 13 years. About 8 years ago Porschaus, Inc. went out of business. But I believe that Scott from Renegade Hybrids(Las Vegas, NV) has the original mold. You might want to give him a call. I am going to try to attach the original Ad for the bumper and a picture of my car.

I'll give scott a call. but unless he wants more than 200 for the mold.. I'll do it myself. And make it right.

Your car really does look sweet! But I think that there is way too much gap between the front of the bumper and the hood.

PS. you need wider front tires (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

I called about 5 years back - no more mold. Andrew - wish you had been around a few years ago - I really like the look. Ended up going chrome bumpers front and back, which looks good too.

2 years ago I had chrome bumpers as well.. now... I also had (wait.. I had 5 lug then...) a T4 in the car... that was ehem.. fun...
