Nice looking Bug. I would pay to see the face of the cop that clocks you going
by at 130 mph in it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/new_shocked.gif) Be safe and have fun. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smoke.gif) |

Hey, this is Bill, Jakes co-pilot and telemetry specialist. I'm checking in from I-80 out in the middle of nowhere outside Reno.
We've filled Jake's web site with data and can't upload any more for now. We're havin' a great time and the engine is running great. We just blew by a '66 bug going 90 mph. (IMG:http://www.aircooledtechnology.com/crosscountry/Busted2.JPG) 2900 miles and counting. See ya |

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!
3,450 miles in total.... 1.4 Gb of data was collected in all! I did ALL the driving myself while Bill was in the back seat with two laptops and all the weather gadgets! The engine ran flawlessly- not a single issue and ZERO maintenance was performed that was not being done for scientific purposes... Today we hit the flatlands in Nevada and ran 50 solid miles at over 90 MPH, temps solid as a rock! I will be posting a full trip summary tomorrow, I'm still screwed up from 23 straight hours in the driver's seat on Wednesday! I feel like I just climbed Mount Everest with one hand tied behind my back- the trip couldn't have been more perfect! |

Nope.. The engine is sold to a local here. I'm pulling the engine Sunday night, then flying home Monday and having the car shipped back. I can't aford to lose another week driving back home..

Yes, of course it was TIV powered... Think I'd be caught dead driving anything else 3,450 miles???!
The DTM worked most excellent, as always providing cool, even temps between all 4 cylinders... Here is the data log from the trip up Loveland Pass to the Continental divide. I was driving this stretch for 4 miles as hard as I possibly could and was only able to get head temps up to 360 F even under full load! If there was ever any doubt about what the DTM could do, they can be put to rest now forever- Look at the average CHT in sthe summary statistics.... I have seen 100% bone stock TIV engines run hotter than this while climbing much smaller grades for much shorter durations of time, all while making 80-100 HP LESS power than this beast made... (IMG:http://www.aircooledtechnology.com/crosscountry/Leg13bCHTEGT.JPG) You can see all the data logs from the Loveland Pass climb here Dominating Loveland pass Here are some more Loveland data logs you will see that we averaged 71 MPH up that pass... Anyone that has ever went to the summit of it will attest that it's about as grueling as they come.. We would have climbed Pike's peak but the suspension was not up to the task- we wiped out a Torsion bar 1500 miles into the trip and had zero suspension on the left rear for the rest of the trip! It got very chilly... That reading was taken more than likely after the engine had already been shut down and then fired right back up giving a spike down, just like the speed... It was warm enough to wear shorts at the top, as you can see in the Loveland Pass pics..
Here is the "Office" where we lived for 5 solid days and up to 23 hours at once without a break... I drove the whole way and Bill logged and uploaded to the net the entire time- we made a very effective team. This trip reminded me that I'm as mortal as everyone else...
This amount of experimentation coupled with the fatigue of 3450 miles of driving has beat the shit out of me... Not to mention the sunburn on my arm thats been hanging out the window for 5 solid days.. It was all worth it- |
