After years of grime, I came across this identification plate on the driver door hinge jamb during my cleaning. I assume that they should be some numbers on the plate? Any ideas why none exist?

#23 (2310) is your color code. Tangerine.
No Karoserrie # on the plate for sixes. Go to your rear trunk. Under the latch on the tub floor, there is a six digit number. I'll bet yours starts at 131---. This is your chasis number from Karmann. DaveP can use this info in his data base. Don |

Does anyone know if the rivets for this plate are still available?
Ditto on the front trunk VIN tag rivets? -Rusty (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smoke.gif) |

Yes, I could use lots of info from this car. Chassis number should be close to 131113, but there are variations of over 200 from the last 4 digits of the VIN to the last 4 digits of the chassis # and the dash #. The dash number has a 0 for a date code after the 13, and the chassis # gets the date code in 1971.

Here's the info on my Swiss import 914-6: VIN 9140431113 Chassis 131292 Color 23 Engine 6400508 COA date 04/01/70 For your database, my "plain jane" 914-4: VIN 4702907023 Chassis 1619516 Color L20E What other info do you need? |

Check for rivits with McMaster-Carr. I read on the VW Squareback forum that they have the correct round head rivits.

If you have a 914/6 the simple answer is no; that is the one and only place on the car.
If you have a 914/4 the chassis # is also on the Karmann badge, and the underside of the dash. The 914/6 dash has its own serial number, and is unlikely to be the same as the chassis number. For the 914/6 the following table may help: VIN 914x43yyyy where x is the model year, and yyyy is the sequence number chassis # 1970 13zzzz 1971 131zzzz 1972 132zzzz dash # 1970 130wwww 1971 131wwww 1972 132wwww The factory goofed on the 1970 chassis # and did not include a year digit. Digits yyyy, zzzz and wwww should be similar, but generally not the same. Differences between them can be large (over 200), but that is unusual. |

i looked harder at my trunk of my 914/6 and i think it is only 5 digits,
13094 serial # 9140430729 according to coa color is 2310, tangerine, which i believe/know is correct, but the door chassis id plate says color 14. Anyone know enough as to what the discrepancy means? |

9140430722 has chassis 130762 so 13094 does not make sense. It could be 130694, but could be anything between 130600 and 130800. If you can, send me a closeup photo as clear as possible. You may have to play with the lighting. It is always possible the factory screwed up though.
Can you scan the COA for me and email to davep (at) koolatron.com color 14 is signal orange (yellow orange) color 23 is tangerine (red orange) almost night and day difference. Again, the factory could have screwed up. Photos would help prove the issue. Errors are not unknown, but this chassis had more than a bad day perhaps. |
