After readling this I have a feeling my first gear synchro may need changing.
Yeah if I sit at a stop then let the clutch out then back in I have to wait before I try first. |

Thanks for the input!! Does it cost much with a mechanic to repair/replace the synchros??

The trick will be knowing a mechanic who knows that gearbox. If you just remove the tailcone, the 1st/reverse cluster is right there, and the synchro can be replaced fairly easily (under $1k). If the mechanic doesn't know this gearbox well, he may remove the entire thing, and pretty much disassemble it, in which case, you're paying for a complete gearbox rebuild ($4K and up).
Chances are good that if 1st is gone, 2nd is close. You might PM Dr. Evil, who can do a refurbishing job on your gearbox for much less than a complete rebuild, but you'll have to pull and replace the gearbox yourself, and ship it to him. |

Man, I go away for 5 days and up pop a bunch of tranny issues.
If you send me your 1st gear I can swap it for you to save you a full rebuild. That is the step that requires the special tool. Just PM me and I will work something out with you. |

How about this? When I first got the car a few months ago, it would start to grind going into first when warmed up. A clutch adjustment (by a mechanic) solved that problem. Now, the engagement of first is different every time I try it. It rarely grinds, but sometimes doesn't want to drop all the way down and engage. I usually try to go really slow and easy and slip into Reverse or Second and that sometimes helps. On occation, I can give it a gentle by stern tug and it pops into first. No grind or noise from the tranny, but an little thunk / click to get it in. Should I start with bushings? The PO replaced the tranny with a rebuilt one (I was told, receipt does not say if it was used or just rebuilt) from Parts Haven 10,000 miles ago. |

Shifter bushings are a snap, and pretty cheap. Will almost certainly make you happier driving it, made a huge difference in my car.
I blip the throttle to get it into first, no grind. Don't get any noise if I go from 1st to reverse either, occasionally do if going in from neutral, especially when car is warmed up. I figured it was synchros, but if I just rev it a bit, it makes no noise so I don't think I am hurting it any |
