So I have had the trouble with my motor lately. I ran a comp test. 1&3 are fine at 120psi 2&4 however only read 30psi. I dont understand how two opposed cyl can be like that. I would under stand 1&2, or 3&4 but 2&4? I guess its time to pull teh heads and see what the hell is going on.
Any Ideas
Thanks

Added a little oil to 2&4 and tried again. this time they came up to about 75psi. so I guess it is rings, and valves then? right?

Don't pull the heads yet! 2 & 4 might indicate a distributor trigger point problem, but an internal problem could still exist. Did you squirt oil in the cylinders and recheck compression?

I just got the car. I havent really done enything. I reset the points gap, at which point all this crap started to happen. I turned the key and I guess the gas in the number one cyl ignited and made a nice loud explosion. So If I do a valve adjustment, what are the tolerances on a 1.7l motor? I dont have a book yet. also how he hell do I tell when Im at TDC for number 1?
Thanks
Andy

Its .06 all around for 1.7's, the 2.0 is spec'd at .006 intake, .008 exhaust. Thats by the book....I adjust minte to .005 all around, and it makes for a less noisy and peppier engine

Adjust the valves and check spark, run it.....you may have washed the cylinders down with gas....have you checked the oil to see if you have gas in the crankcase??
