Yuppers, that was the original 914 design. When presented to management, the bean counters figured out it would cost $8 more per car to make it that way with the nice curves.

"Let's build a box on a box, tell them it's a Porsche, and they'll buy it anyway".
"Oh, and that extra $12 per car to galvanize the tub? Forget about it, the car won't last that long anyway."

That original pic looks an awful lot like the cutaway drawing that's in most of the owner's manuals (and elsewhere) that has been literally cut-and-pasted. Those off-vertical lines through the image make me suspicious... I'm guessing someone was just messing around with a xerox, myself.
