Yuppers, that was the original 914 design. When presented to management, the bean counters figured out it would cost $8 more per car to make it that way with the nice curves.

That original pic looks an awful lot like the cutaway drawing that's in most of the owner's manuals (and elsewhere) that has been literally cut-and-pasted. Those off-vertical lines through the image make me suspicious... I'm guessing someone was just messing around with a xerox, myself.
