I'm dreaming about a bigger engine, ebay car porn, and I've never heard of anyone putting a 3.6 in a 914. I'm sure it's been done, any stories? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

I know of a couple, one.... was originally a SF bay area car but was sold to a person in Arizona. He is a member here but don't remember his name.
The other one has been bought and sold several times in the last few years. It is silver with lots of goodies on it besides the motor.

Saw a carbon fiber wide bodied track car being built with a 3.6 earlier this year when I was doing my conversion. Looked scary fast. I think Andy is doing a 3.6 conversion.

Isn't Joe Obrians car a 3.6? Series9

I know a guy a few blocks away from my house putting in 3.8 with a flipped g50... I think he is about 70K into it and it will be a while before that ones tail gets twisted...

Well obviously everyone must have one.
SCCA has been screwing around with Street Mod rules again. They seem to be using a 914 with 3.6 as the measuring stick. 2450 pounds
Why bother sticking that much money in a car and then be limited by ridiculously high minimum wieght. and then probably get the rules changed on you again next year.

This is the Paddock for racing right?
I pitched a bitch because my early car came fromt he factory lighter than thier new minimum. 2050 lbs. Why would I bother competing in Street Mod 2 if I have to ADD lead to the floors.

There's a highly modified 914 with a 3.8 that runs with the POC. He's usually runs near the TTOD at the Streets of Willow events. Very fast on the big track too.

So not to "poop" in your soup Joe. But what's it weigh?
I bet you couldn't run SM2. nor XP and probably not FP.
Something MODIFIED in which you would get your ass handed to you.

SCCA rules SUCK!!!!!!!

Joe (Ricard),

You mention SM2 and XP, you've got to know these are massively expensive classes to be at the front of the pack. I still think a competitive 6-cyl 914 can work in SM2, but not with a stock driveline. We're talking full tilt motor, blower, and probably a pretty trick gearbox to boot. Look at the top two cars in Street Mod, the Sias and Tunnell BMW's. These cars have $$$$ in them with -years- of development. SM2 is more of the same with "smaller" cars ( I used quotes 'cause while the intent was for cars like the miata and CRX, the Vette also gets to play there 'cause it has only two seats... geez...). Also keep in mind that SM and SM2 are still "works in progress". And no, the rules weren't written with the 914 in mind. The mid-engined weight penaly was put in place out of fear of the Elise/Exige. Which I think is absurd. I do think that they've got something against mid/rear cars, but it's not the 914 specifically. Also keep in mind that SM and ST are -marketing- classes. They have a target demographic, and they've done a reasonably good job of hitting it. ST almost blew up in thier faces though. The class was (arguably)designed around the subie, but the '89 Civic was the car that rose to the top. Another very popular car with the Sport Compact crowd. Rare 30+ year old cars are not what they had in mind...

As for FP, that's a different ball of wax. FP is based on old production style rules, and a 3.6 simply isn't an option. 2.8L is as far as you can go with a 914. And a 3.6L powered 911 in FP has to weigh 2700#.

Have you seen Fordhal's FP 914 run? It's staggeringingly fast. I'm sure JP can attest to that. But that car has more money in the motor that's powering it than I've probably spent on my last 3 cars combined.

And driveline's are just the start. Suspension and contact patch controll are the biggies. Any 914 that is gonna play in these classes needs big tahrs, and a really spiff suspension to match. And that too, costs money times 10.

A mildly developed 914 with a stock 3.6 in either of these classes is like bringin' a spork to a gun fight... These are classes of heavy duty preparation and cubic dollars. The three classes you mention are probably 3 of the 6 most expensive classes in Solo2 to be competitive in. (AM, DM, and EM being the other three).

Joe (O'Brien), I think your car is a spectacular piece of work. And if I were to build the ultimate track-day 914 that could still drive me to the track and back in relative comfort, I'd be calling you up for a copy of said car. Saddly, my budget ain't working on the same plane of reality. I'm not dissing the car at all, but it's just not built for full blown competition (in these classes). And a full blown race car is not something that you'd want to drive around town in traffic with for very long...

Joe (Ricard), you knew the stakes when you jumped in, what's the deal?

Oh yeah, there's a clone of Joe O'Brien's car out here in the Rockies. Quite a glorious machine it is.

So yes, a 3.6L is definitely doable. But it's not a drop-in conversion from smaller sixes. The oil cooling is vital. There's no engine mounted oil cooler on a 3.6L, so front mounted oil cooling pretty much manditory.

Sounds good ta me. Gives you the excuse to build in a nice cage to stiffen the chassis!! Drop some weight with CF or FG hood and early doors and you're close to getting back to stock weight anyway.

You're allowed 8 points of attachment for a cage, that's -plenty- for stiffening up the chassis.

My buddy Hassan. He won the Improved 914club cup last year.
1st event in the car he smoked the field by 2 seconds. and than was only after a few laps around the block getting the 1-2 gear shift down.

I beat him this past weekend by 1 sec. but he was in his new Civic hatch and still tuning it.

I just found Patrick Motorsports' website. They sell everything to convert to a 3.6. It looks like more work and alot more $$$ than a 3.2 & earlier conversion.
