OK, my hand brake has always worked by friction, and the ratchet has only ever engaged once (on the freeway, stuck in traffic, embarassing). I need to get it working right to pass the Roadworthy inspection when I finally register the 914.
So, how does the early lever work to engage the ratchet? Should there be a spring in there? (other than the sping on the push rod) Has anyone got a photo of the parts? PET doesn't really show it too clearly. Thanks. |

Thanks! I didn't see this earlier. So, is that a bondo-made part? That's pretty close to what I was considering making...

Nope, I have a complete early lever that I picked up at a swap meet for use in my V8 car. I was tidying the garage yesterday, found it, and remembered this thread. That's a 3" x 5" card that it's pictured on, that should be enough to duplicate it. The half circle bit fits on the body pivot, and the other end pushes the pawl against the ratchet. It's kind of tricky to get it in there, it has to be compressed and go in from the bottom. It's a very thin piece and doesn't push with much force, just enough to make a soft clicking noise as you pull it up. |

Interesting. So we've found a part that's missing from PET. I'll see what I can do to replicate it, though. Looks pretty straight-forward.

Extend the loop part around the pivot a little so it grips further around... the first one I made shot straight up and out as soon as I folded the handle to install it. That may be where the original went!
