Despite all the work (including blood and sweat, literally) I am considering (remote possibility) selling my 914. Much of it depends on what I can get for it? I have a salvage titled '73 914 that has undergone a complete amateur restoration over the past 18 months. Everything outside of the rear brakes and bearings have been done and renewed or replaced. I just completed resealing the engine and it was a success. Many of you have tracked my projects and I was just wondering what it is worth? I will most likely drive it through teh remainder of the Summer and if I do decide to sell will most likely be in the Spring when I can maximize my return - but what do you think - $5k or $8k - or am I dreaming even getting $5?

I've been watching the asking prices and I get the feeling that it all depends. It almost seems that those of us outside the south west actually get a premium for our cars. Supply and demand I suppose - not many of them left up here. If your frame is unmolested and the car is complete then I would consider $8k reasonable. If the body has been restored well and the car complete then the $5k would be interesting to me (not that I'm buying right now ;-)
In Ontario I've seen 'no rust' original paint rollers with a $4k asking price. There is a solid unmolested LE cremesickle with excellent new paint available for $10k unassembled and $15k assembled. Prices are just nuts. It just depends on the available buyers. |

I think 5K is very reasonable. 8K may be on the high end, but depending on what it looks like inside the engine, it may be worth it.

If 73 2.0 then could bring close to $8,000 with some marketing. Provided no rust, tears etc. The salvage title can cost you a lot on the car. I would try and find some fuchs wheels for reasonable price that could help getting the higher price.
$5,000 should be very easy. mike |

I would only buy a 914 with a salvaged title if there was thorough documentation of why and what was fixed, not just a "it was stolen then returned" story. These cars bend easily on impact (good thing for driver safety) and this will affect alignment....I am super sensitive to this now becuase the 914 I bought seems a little bent, but this was not noticeble at all until I got under the car and inspected thoroughly (dinged-bent A-arm collar, rub/dent on inner fenderwell). However, there are great deals out there from people that can't unload a salvaged car....hopefully you won't have that problem. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) |

If I were buying it for personal use the salvage title wouldn't freak me out entirely...
but on ebay and to the general public I think that is a different story. the reason the prices are going crazy on these cars is because a wider audience is getting interested into them. And its this same wider audience that is going to worry about the salvage title. brant |

As another Ohioan, you can vouch that these cars in good shape are hard to come by around here, which may add $1000 over a comparable car from a sunnier climate. I had to spend $1000 - $1500 in ancillary expenses (plane tix, tow hitch for the truck, etc.) to find a sunbelt 914 and bring it home. The point is, if you concentrate on selling it locally, you can probably get away with asking a little more. |

my car is a salvage title car as well...luckly I know the history (impact with a deer = new fender and windshield frame, professionally repaired), however if I was to try and sell it, the prospective buyers might not care what happened and be scared away....do you know the salvage title??

ouch, I missed the salvaged detail... many states won't allow a salvaged title to be registered and driven... I don't know which states though In Ohio, after the car is repaired, it can be inspected and passed by the highway patrol, after which you are eligible for a "rebuilt salvage" title. |

then that's not that big a deal then... can this car pass that inspection? if so, I'd do that before selling and it would boost the price a lot, I'm sure

I'm not "that" far from you.... and decent 914s sell good around here.
My last one........ had aged paint, and some electrical quirks, but overall, was in pretty decent shape. I "asked" $4900 for it. I bought it (In Arizona) 3 months earlier.... for $3600 I sold it for $4500/.......... in under 24 hours. Spend the $100....... put it on the cover page of the local Auto Trader. Stay OFF EBAY!!! You'll sell it. |
