No need to bleed the bottom. Air rises.
Crack open the top nipples and bleed. During the process, you can tap the calipers with a rubber mallet to free up any trapped bubbles. |

I have always advocated that the calipers be drained first by openning both bleed nipples (when so equipped). Then the bottom nipples are closed, and the calipers refilled, followed by full bleeding. Why, you ask? Think about the design of the calipers; the bleed nipples are on the same side as is the brake line. The fresh fluid will always take the shortest route. Thus, the fresh fluid will enter at the back of the inner piston, go out through the nearby port directly up to the bleed nipple. Notice that the fresh fluid never gets near the outer piston. The old fluid, containing water, will continue to rust up the outer caliper half. I have rebuilt about 50 calipers over the past 20 years, and they are almost always more rusted on the outside half. I also advocate disassembly every few years to remove the rust. Both front and rear calipers have internal mechanisms that trap old fluid. It is virtually impossible to get rid of the contaminated fluid without a drain and flush. YRMV. Never ever use compressed air to pop the pistons out, do it hydraulically to prevent injury and damage.

Ah, you young chaps! So easily distracted. Anyway, I don't see any nipples, just a bulging blouse.

I've been analyzing this avatar at length regarding the topic of "nipples" . I'm afraid I high-res copy of the avatar won't be sufficient. I'll need you to send me the model used to create the video. The blue blouse is optional.
I definitely need "first hand" knowledge. |
