Guys,

Is it basically safe to run your 914 without the lid? My lid is busted and I want to drive it with the lid removed for a little bit.

Unless it is raining or something it would be fine, a GT lid is essentially just a grill there, so I can't imagine it would have any adverse effect on airflow

It's very noisy, but otherwise OK.

Unless it is raining

why? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

i've been running the GT lid, which is essentially just some open mesh, for some 5 years now, including a few drives in heavy rain.
every time i wash the car, i pressurewash (not full blast, mind you) the top of the engine and the engine comp ...

as long as you make sure all the stuff is there, like a cover for the relay board, air-box etc., rainwater from the top won't do you any harm ...

when i launched a rod thru the case, the lid kept alot of shrapnel from coming out of the engine bay (have the inside out dent to prove it)

so maybe it is just as well to leave it in place.

once when i ran the car at the track without the lid and it made no difference in head or oil temps anyway.

Is your rear window a little rattly too? If so, this is the PERFECT time to replace the butyl tape... but leave the window out as long as the lid is off. Everyone should experience how loud a 914 with no rear window and no engine lid is! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)
