Hello, I am Brent and here is my problem:

I leave for college in florida on sunday. My 914 has been insured through hagerty in my dad's name (im 18), but hagerty won't insure the 914 because it won't be in an inclosed, locked garage. I'm also forced to be listed as a Primary Driver, since my parents aren't going down with me...I do however have relatives in florida, but i don't know if this could possibly help me...

So right now, my lowest insurance quote is $2400 per year through Commerce, with moderate limits. I simply cannot afford this. I'm gonna have to stick my car in a garage or under a tarp for four years unless I can come up with a more affordable insurance policy....I tried Geico and the other online agencies, and I don't qualify for any antique policies. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

I love my 914, so any help would be greatly appreciated! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Your age is whats killing you(I don't know your record) I hardly pay anything.

Have you checked statefarm? Good coverage and better prices, best I could find.

If mon & dad will let you, leave it at their place under the hagerty policy. If you can afford a cheap "plain jane modern" car, get one and just keep the baisc coverage on it while in FL.

I'm sure it's my age that's the killer....im only 18 but my record is clear, FWIW.

I don't think I'll have storage at my parent's house...which BLOWS because I've been restoring my car over the past year, and just finished today. I leave in three days. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

well keep 'em coming, I will look into State Farm.

thanks,
brent

I believe that all the antique car insurance policies operate under the assumption that you have another car that is your primary transportation, hence the good rates. I can't imagine that liability only insurance whould be that much, just get an old POS to drive.

Assuming you don't owe anything on the 914, then just get liability insurance. The most expensive part of most policies is collision, esp. for a young driver. Liability insurance is usually a lot less. This means you basically have an infinite deductable to fix damage to your car caused any accidents that are your fault, or if your car is stolen. Liability will cover any damage you do to someone else (and is the part required by law). The other person's liability will cover your car if they do damage to you (in most states). You are not required to carry collision insurance, unless you have a loan for the car.

This is usually an economical way to own cars that you don't really NEED to have working, as they can spent a considerable time sitting while you save up the money to fix them after you bend the fender around a tree or something. We're generally fortunate in that our cars are not high on the car theft list. The pros don't want them (too hard to move the parts), and the joyriders usually can't figure out the shifter.

Dashers, Allstate, progressive, and USAA (if your folks were in the military at any time) are the ones that I have used.

Dashers, Allstate and Progressive were the first I used when I was 19 - 23, then I found USAA and could not be happier. Just get liability or you wont be able to afford it.

State Farm will not insure you unless you are 25 with no accidents or moving violations OR your parents are members. I tried them first way back and they told me to pound sand.

Also to consider, AIS, Safe Auto, or any other insurance company with commercials on during the day time that seem to pander to the urban/ghetto, not so bright crowd (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Try 21st Century. I switched to them because they were less than half the price of what I was paying to State Farm.

Part of me feels like full coverage on anything but a perfect 4 or a nice 6 is a waste of time. The values on most 914s are so low that you're almost guaranteed they're going to total the car even if it's just a fender bender or rear end collision. Since that is often the case, you're paying extra money for a return you're not going to be happy with. If the car were disposable you could take your nice total wreck check and buy something else. But since we like 914s (we do right?) we almost always buy them back. And then you have a salvage title and you still have to pay for the repairs. So... if it's not a friggen perfect $10,000 car, I would get liability and be done with it.

I would just store it for the 4 years.

Geico seems to give the best rates in the Northeast. If they can't give you a good Liability quote then store it.

I got quoted anywhere between $4000-5000 when I was thinking of getting an exige (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

State Farm charges me $282/6months for $250/500k liability with a 20 year old female driver listed as primary on my '76 914. It's the only car we have that does not have full coverage so my daughter is rated on it instead of the Jeep she mostly uses. Libility limits are required to be that high to support the umbrella policy. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy11.gif)

Try Nationwide in your area. They just purchased two risk companies to compete with Progressive. Insurance sux.

Ask Howard, he may have an idea for you.

I've had good luck with Geico and Mercury. I'm also old enough to be your... ahh...older brother. Yeah that's it. Where's Howard when you need him. On some treck to the tundra I think.

Oh ya, Mercury is usually low. I think I had them first, cant remember.

I was paying $135/mo for an 82 Ford escort in 96 when I had only had my licence for a few months.

The reason I started out riding motorcycles was because the insurance was $30/mo when I was 18.

Yeah, under 25 for a guy is killer on insurance.

I started (and have stayed) with Farmer's Insurance. State Farm wouldn't even carry me, even with my Dad on them, and Geico was about 100 more per month. 16 years old (1996) I paid 125 / mo liability only. Didn't have full coverage on a car until I bought my 87 Monte Aerocoupe when I was.. 23. I paid about 125 IIRC.

Just get liability only and it should be more affordable. Of course if you don't work and parents don't give much money... (I worked nights the last three years of college.. Grades went down the tube and absence rate went to like 25-30%.. Paid the bills I had, made me rich, spent it on a girl that ran off after four years and was shortly after pregenant with her co-worker's (another waiter) kid. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) Different story)

Just call around. I mean, I JUST took my Dad off my policy after I turned 25 last year. The Agents will normally work with you however they can, if you have a good one and a good driving record/personality.

You must be going to live in a very costly (by the insurance co.) area in Florida. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif) But your age is the major factor, unfortunately. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/WTF.gif)

Mercury is very affordable.

Try good ol' AAA. I have them know. I have an 86 Toyota 4x4 and my 73 914 on a policy, 30/60,000, uninsured motorist, no comp/collision, and a nasty driving record (but only until Sept. 4th! ), and I pay $997 annually. Once my accident drops off, I get an extra 20% off!

AAA is everywhere.

I guess it pays to be middle aged with no at-fault accidents and no tickets. 6-month premium on my 1975 is $81.00 thorugh 21st Century. Bodily injury is 250 / 500, property damage liab is $100,000, $5,000 excess medical and 100/300 uninsured motorist bodily injury. NO comprehensive and no collision. Multiple car discounts also apply.

BTW I bought this car from an 18 year old a few weeks before college. He was saddened, (maybe for letting it go for a lot less than what he put in) and we keep in touch via email from time to time.
