I know that someone on this list must have done a jack post/plate install. I've got a few questions.

1) The post obviously doesn't fit the hole in the plate on the aftermarket parts. So, where does the plate need to be modified in order for the new post to line up correctly with the outer rocker pannel?

2) How do you get access to the top of the plate to weld? Is the factory part even welded on top to begin with.

3) What's the best way to clean the old part off in the tight areas?

4) It looks to me that the post needs to be welded to the longitudinal first. How do you get the plate over the post and under the door threshold?

Rick,

did you get any "offline" answers for this ??

You wont be able to weld the top unless you cut the fender for access.

I'll respond in more detail with some pics.. if you didnt get an answer.

Ok.

I have pics "somewhere" of a replacement I did on a race car. I'll dig them up tonight. Look for them tomorrow when you check in. It may be late before I find them. I havent refernced them in awhile.

Hey, I'm an idiot (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) so don't think anything I say is
the right thing to do, but I'll tell you what I did
anyway.

1) The post fit through the plates that I got. It is
tight.

2) Can't get to the top with the fender on, but I
didn't think that was a great concern. Doesn't
seem that area would be useful strength. Factory
spot welded it, maybe while the long was still
all by itself.

3) I left some up at the top, couldn't get it with
any average tools I have.

4) You're right that the post needs to be
welded first, then there is no way to put the
intact support plate over it if the fender is on
the car, but in my case I trimmed the top ear
off and it will fit over.

I've got pictures of when i replaced the jackpost on an early 911...would that help?

Actually, I replaced the longs. (I too had to cut into the rear fender, not something I wanted to do, but had no choice to do the repair correctly)

Thanks Mike, I'm not sure if the 911 jack post pictures would help. My knowledge of 911 rust repair is just about squat, so I'm not sure if it is similar enough to the 914 to enlighten my warped mind. :cursor:

Lets see what Brad comes up with. I may ask for them later if you don't mind.

Thanks
Rick

I'm out. I looked in the folder (on the computer) for the car that I installed them on and I found NO pics of the install. I recall shooting them, but they may or may not have made it to a computer.

Sorry about that. Each car I have touched has a folder on my home server and this server with every pic I took of "given" car. That particular car doesnt have many pics for some reason.

No problem Brad. Thanks for checking.

Mike, could you post a link to your 911 Jack Post install?

Brad, you can come over to my house and repair my jack post. I'll take the pictures (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Actually I'm thinking of just not having jack posts since I don't know how they'll work with my flares (the flare starts forward of the jack post and blends in with the rocker panel).

You will need to extend the square tube to "reach out and match" the fender. I'll weld them on for you... just prep it for the welding and drill some rossette holes in the bottom of the plate and the small sides that hold the square tube.

Great! Can you bring your MIG from Jason's house and leave it for a few months so I can make:
- the radiator mount?
- the engine bar?
- the custom tranny mounts?
- a dozen odd brackets and such?

Man this project got out of hand. Still having fun tho (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
