I took a leisurely drive from San Francisco to te Marin Headlands yesterday. The fellow I met with used to work at a Porsche shop on San Rafael. Got a nice score. For $40 I got a pair of passenger side mirrors (no logo markings), pair of used foglights, roof storage clips, turnsignal housings, several boxes of miscellaneuous 914 hardware and switches, old German autoclub badge, etc. etc. Even got Vanagon turnsignal lamps and a taillight. All clean and were in dry storage -- $40.
Anyway, while chatting with this fellow, he mentioned an interesting car he found during his travels in Marin. I don't have a clear recollection of the exact location but I know it's in Marin. It's supposed to be a 914 GT with slightly more than 52 miles on it. The owner was going racing with it so the engine and transmission were removed. The owner got busy with life and the car sat covered in a garage with another Porsche sitting on the top shelf of the lift it was parked under. Over the years, the engine and transaxle got in the way and was sold off. The Owner's business eventually slowed down and he got around to looking over his toys. He then came to the realization that he had really screwed up by selling the drivetrain out of the GT. He was so upset at himself that he has not been able to do anything with the car. So there it sits under the cover still owned by the original purchaser for over 30 years now. The owner is wealthy enough to tell anyone asking to go screw themselves when they try to buy it. However, this old fella is getting -- well old. I don't wish this on anyone but he will pass on to greener racetracks one of these days. The car will likely come up for sale at that time as the guys kids have no interest in it. It sounds like an important part of 914 history if the tale is accurate. I may need to take another trip to the Headlands to refresh my recollection about the exact location of this jewel. Is this possible? Is there really ay unaccounted for 914 GT floating around? My source appears to be quite knowledgeable about Porsches and is a genuine enthusiast. He has since retired from the car scene so has no further desire to pursue this quarry. I think his rebuffed multiple attempts to purchase was blown off by the owner too many times that he has just given up. He's into old Chevies now. Fact or fairytale? I can't say right now. It's gotta be worth a bunch even w/o an engine and trans... BenT |

Fact or fairytale? if it's the car i think it is (there are not that many in marin that fit the bill) then it's actually not a factory GT but a genuine m471 car. yes, motor and tranny are missing, but the rest of the car is prestine. i have touched it with my own bare hands ... and yes, he's not really interested in selling, trust me, i have asked more than once ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/bye1.gif) Andy Well, I won't profess to know what an M471 car is but it sounds like the same car. I'm just amazed that this was a real car with a real story. Reminds me of the recent Craigslist supposed cheap 914-6 for sale hoax. The posting was wrong since I bought that fictitious car just before joining this group. Lots of goodies hiding around the Bay. Pretty close... Flares, bigger wheels (15x7 all around if I recall correctly), and spacers to make the wheels fill the wheel wells out. Oh, I think it had flared rocker panels and possibly front valance, but no rear valance.
No mechanical changes from the standard 914-6. Sometimes, though, I hear the factory GTs called "M471" as well. Not sure if it's a mis-use of the term, or some confusion at the factory, or my own confusion. Most of the GTs had more stuff than that, of course. --DD |

Here is a tidbit of info for you:
Im wearing the same pants and shirt I wore that day I took those pics on Armando's site. I thought it was funny..LOL I have the "rest" of the pics also. Get in line for the car. I know of at least 4-5 people with deep pockets waiting for the owner to die..lol Interesting history on it: It belonged to Grace Slicks husband. He bought it at Art Bunkers dealership in Kansas. Had it shipped to SF where the current owner saw it running around downtown. The current owner chased the guy down and told him if he "ever wanted to sell it".. a few months later in 1974... the current owner bought it and has owned it ever since. It has something like 14k original miles on it. I worked in the building where it sits. B |

My GF already thinks 20+ cars are too much. I promised to get down to half that by next year. Hey anyone here wanna buy a 2002 Comptech NSX. Has less than $7K miles. It's owner isn't famous but he sells stuff cheap. His 84 Testarossa is available too. He's the guy I got my 73 /4 from. He's wearing the same shirt tonight that he wore when I bought his 914 and 930S slantnose. Two years apart and he is still wearing the same shirt. Now THAT'S funny. He's trying to get his whole crew to wear the same shirt. No, not the actual shirt but one just like it. BenT |

Thanks for the M471 edumakashun. here's the skinny ... a "real" GT has been build by the porsche factory. some were raced by porsche, some were race by others, but they *all* were build by porsche in germany. a "m471" is a 914-6 that had the m471 package installed by a dealership of your choice. the m471 package was *not* a GT package, it was in fact a GT inspired upgrade for your 914-6 to make it look like a real GT ... more of a visual upgrade than a performance upgrade. but, the m471 package was a fairly rare option, not too many of them survived the years ... so, in it's own regard, this car is fairly special, also because it has such low milage and is in decent shape overall ... a "m471" is a 914-6 that had the m471 package installed by a dealership of your choice. the same here ... the M471 was an option that directly came from the Porsche factory there are several M471 cars on the GT list provided by Porsche the car in question is on this list as well as the gemini blue M471 from AA of course there are some dealer conversions, too (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wavey.gif) Gustl |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool_shades.gif) Andy PS: just to clarify, the GT package and the m471 package are *not* the same ... |

There were less than 50 "factory" GT's built but there were 400 GT kits made available to dealers and customers to turn their cars into GT's (per Glen Stazak's site)
Armando's site shows 43 different items that make up a GT, but even he says that not every item was used on each car and it is possible there are no two GT cars alike..... I remember there were more pictures of the car that Ben started the thread about when it was first "discovered" (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |
