How do you attach a fiberglass fender to a car? Is the fender a full fender or is it mostly a partial so you have to cut away the metal fender and graft in the FB in the resultant hole? Pictures?

The fronts I bought were full fenders. You would have to cut the steel fender away completly and bond the new f/g fender on. Rears are the same way with them being complete quarter panels some even have the targa bar on it.
Now some GT flares are just the flare and you bond it on the stock fender. I personally would not do this on a stock and daily street driven 914. |

They make them both ways....but typically they are bonded and molded on....the lip of the stock fender is cut away.

The full fender in f/g. You really de-value the car and safety becomes an issue with only f/g all around you. Now it is a track car or autox only, do it.

Why don't you and Air Cooled Nut get together and make a list of f/g fender questions up and I'd be glad to answer them. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I will say this, it is more work getting the stock fender off than it is installing a f/g one. Paul |

I have some questions about Fiberglass Fenders, and quarter panels.
If you pull the metal Fenders, all they way around, and install Fiberglass ones, does it cause structual intergity issues? If you had Fiberglass Fenders hoods, and bumpers, but steel doors, would you feel safe using that as a street car? If you added a cage would it be safe enough? Would you recommend just going to a body shop for this type of rebody, over a relative tyro trying this type of body work? In your experince, do FG pieces ussualy line, up, or require a shitload of prep work to get the gaps right? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smash.gif) With having Steel Doors, and FG everything else, will it be quickly apparent between them? I'm sure I'll have more questions when I start this part of the WORK as I'm calling it now, after the New year. Ifg you answer, thanks in advance! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy11.gif) |

QUOTE If you pull the metal Fenders, all they way around, and install Fiberglass ones, does it cause structual intergity issues? I would ask, Why do this on a street car? It is a lot of work. It would be easier to leave them steel But to answer your question I think it would cause problems. You ever see a kit car after 10 years? The F/G cracks. QUOTE If you had Fiberglass Fenders hoods, and bumpers, but steel doors, would you feel safe using that as a street car? No, not with the nut jobs driving around here. QUOTE If you added a cage would it be safe enough? There have been several topics about using a cage in a street car. But I would not like a full cage in a daily driver. QUOTE Would you recommend just going to a body shop for this type of rebody, over a relative tyro trying this type of body work? If you can afford a body shop-let them deal with the problems. QUOTE In your experince, do FG pieces ussualy line, up, or require a shitload of prep work to get the gaps right? No, they don't because it depends on how you mount them to the body. Some rework is always needed. [QUOTE] With having Steel Doors, and FG everything else, will it be quickly apparent between them?[QUOTE] Depends, on too many things. Some people will now disagree with me. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) Paul |

Clipped from the following thread:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread....highlight=epoxy I used marine type epoxy and it bonds fine to fiberglass. The reverse is not necessarily true. I know nothing about corvettes, but the chopper gunned flares that are for sale are no different that the cheap boats or truck caps that I've seen. I've sued lots of both, and find it very hard to believe that any polyester-based product can adhere as well as properly used epoxy. I installed my fiberglass flares with the help of the gentleman restoring my car. He has used 'kitty hair', bondo, and other polyester-based products before and was very impressed with the epoxy, stating that the results were the best he's seen. (try removing steel fasteners from epoxy vs polyester resin and you'll see why. You need to heat them with a soldering gun.) Epoxy is amazing stuff and if you want to play with some, its cheap to start. These guys have a $10.00 trial kit including a book which is worth twice the price. http://systemthree.com Having done it once, I'd do one thing differently. I used a long-strand glass and silica-filled mix of epoxy to bond the trial-fitted flares to the clean steel. Screws held it in place and while the resin cured I sculpted the squeeze-out inside the fenders to ensure a smooth transition from glass to steel. I then overlaid the joint with woven 'glass tape inside the fender, and fille the weave. Smooooooth. What I should have done prior to that last step is peppered the steel adjacent to the glass flare with holes along the length of the joint, then ground the glass flare to be nearly flush, and epoxied glass tape to the inside AND outside. The resin would meet through the holes and make a very strong epoxy/glass/steel/epoxy/glass sandwich. Next time..... Yes, some of the 'glass parts are crap and will require some skilled (easily learned) work to get them to fit right. You tell me if they look different or bad. Attached image(s) ![]() |

OK, its yours. If you get serious, I'll write more on the little details about fitting them. Mine aren't fitted as well as I'd like, though they aren't really bad. There are some things to look out for, just requires a bit of extra care and patience. If you can inspect and compare flares for symmetry before buying that would help. Mine - from GT racing - were really wonky and one rocker was 1" shorter than the other, and the rockers are what you use to locate the flares! Lucky we noticed.

Lotus,
The original questions were about changing the ENTIRE fender to a f/g fender. Try cutting the entire q-panel off and install a f/g panel. Totally different set of problems. Bonding flares to the steel body is pretty simple stuff. Yes, your car looks great, no doubt. Paul |

The main reason I'm interested in doing all FG fenders is weight. I'm a big guy, 300 pounds, I think I can lost ~50 pounds from me, but the rest has to come from the car.
The car I'm trying to work out the planning on is going to be a Weekend street driver/ distance cruiser, with some track days. It needs a new trunk lid, so thats going to be FG, and its going to want Flares at some point. I don't think I can afford Steel Flares. I do plan to add a cage, but its not going to be a full bar hopping cage. I don't really care about the resale value of the car. I plan to die and get buried in this ride. I certainly do want to be safe though, and so now I'm reconsidering the FG full fenders. I've not spent a dime on this so I'm not committed either way yet. Infact its most likey going to be next year before I see any exterior change on this ride. But, I've always heard on a project car to have a plan, and stick to the plan. 'Sides if I win the loto, I need to have a plan to move quickly on right? Thank you for your insight though guys. I'll keep working out a plan. and watching other guys progress for now. And ohh, Dave your car looks horrible. If your so ashamed of it, I'll let you park it in my covered parking spot, if you leave me the keys and a full tank of gas. |

Here's a little advice or at least something to think about.
Change all the bolt-on pieces to f/g. (bumpers, trunk lids, roof, rocker panels). I say this because they are easy to do and have a big impact on weight. You can change all this in a matter of hours if you have the pieces. If you go into changing complete quater panels it will take a long time to do it yourself or some coins to have someone else do it. It will add months to your project. Get the car on the road and drive it. Than see if you reallly need to go the complete f/g fender route. Paul |
