The steering wheel on the 74 parts car is frozen, as in it won't turn. In my 70 I can turn the wheel without the key in the ignition, is this the way all
914 are or do you need to have the ignition turned
to on before the steering wheel can move??

If it needs to be on then what can you do if you
don't have a key?? Being able to turn the wheel
will make getting the car out much easier.

I'd imagine you can pull the steering column apart to disable the steering lock. I'm pretty sure it does have one.

yepp, they have a lock. if yours dosen't, something is wrong ...

but back to the parts car, taking the column apart is quite a task, especially on a car like that. it might be easier to disconnect the shaft just before it goes through the front firewall. there is a connector "knee" (how do you call those in english?) with just one bolt (13mm if i'm not mistaken). all you need is a BFH (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smash.gif) cause it might be rusted together.

then, turn the wheels by hand. i mean, actually grab a wheel and turn.

Man I just had this problem recently. Undo that u-joint Andy is talking about and see if you can get it separated. If it won't budge you can always undo the 4 large allen bolts on the bottom side of the steering column and yank the whole column out as a unit from the steering wheel all the way down to the firewall (Undo the wiring first!).

interesting. and i thought someone had removed the locking plate from the shaft on my '70. i better not throw that column away, looks like one of those rare euro-spec parts (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif)

Ask the guy you bought them from for the keys. He had to have them to move them into the yard?

The locking portion of the key is a pin. I pulled the steering wheel on one of the 72's and was able to jimmy the pin into the open position to move it around. There were some other pieces I had to take off to get to it, but it is doable.

If you don't posess a key, a locksmith should be able to make a reproduction key from one of the other locks.

If the steering wheel lock has never been replaced it should be identical to the other locks, i.e., in the glove compartment box, handle to open the front trunk, doors, and rear trunk.

You will have to do this anyway if you want to drive the car one day. Or do you plan on changing all the locks ($$$)?

Make sure to start with a blank key with two grooves (OEM black key). The ones with three grooves (OEM red key) are for valet parking and won't fit the glove compartment box or handle to open the front trunk lock...
