Hey Jeff,

No idea on the cost, but you can offset the bill by stuffing the car full of parts that we might be interested in buying (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I can get it to LA. I know a German importer that sends old VW's from Germany to the USA every 6 weeks. He has his own cargo containers and packs them with cars/parts. His business is in Ontario, Ca. but he stays in Germany for weeks at a time. I buy engines from him. He attends German auctions and buy's anything of value. One of his last major purchases was all the VW powered water pumpers (sucks water from pond for putting out fires) It had four handles on it so it could be carried to the pond from the fire truck. I guess Germany didnt have fire trucks that pumped water.

He also brings over Unimogs.

Try this:

AutoMovers

They only list one location in Germany. But, to go from Germany to NYC is listed as $1,450. I'll drive it the rest of the way for you.

Ahhh, but the car hasnt run since 1999...that will add cost to the shippers no doubt.

And aren't there import duties or something else also?

Would this car need to be federalized with safety glass and is there anything else to consider...besides the fact that I cant speak word of German?

Sounds like it would mean a road trip with my german interpreter friend....

Or Maybe Geoff can get it for me when he is there and see to all the details.

Hello Geoff...are you there???

Federalized for sure, but there are lots of places experienced in doing so. Still, something else to check into.

All Germans who are 40 and under speak english. Andy tells me they where "forced" to take English classes for several years. We held them at gun point after WWII.

I wont swear to it, but I think it fly's in under the "federal" date. I know the guy who brings in the VW's doesnt do anything to them. Although it could be that they are too old. Check.

haha, that's one way to look at it. probably not too far from the truth actually. considering that kids in east germany learned russian instead.

but yes, he's right. every german, i'd say 45 and under will speak and understand at least basic english. even if you go the shortest route (education wise) you'll end up with at least 4 years of english in school.

No Ferg,

This is another guy who supplies most of SoCal with vintage VW's and German parts.

I dont really want to say the name in public. He is busy enough as is.

Bowlsby... .what are you waiting for?

Have you ever seen another one of these? The 100,000 badge "could" be faked, but probably not.

As you stated earlier, this is probably the Holy Grail of LE 914s...

I say Buy It!!!

I'm with Karl.

Buy it.

We'll all help you get it here.

Here's my first contrib -- I brough my /6 in from Canada. You'll pay some form of taxation to get it in, but they don't give a rat's patoot about smog/etc. It's too old. I got most info from various gov't websites and a call to customs.

I'm happy to share more details if it's helpful.

Let's get that German car home where it belongs!

this is different than cars, but I imported a $4500 motorcycle from japan to CA and the taxation duty fee stuff (I forgot how much) was going to be minimal. of course the port of oakland impounded the bike and sent it back for other reasons. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

oh yeah, it cost $500 to ship the motorcycle, so figure a car is going to be quite a bit more.

Jeff,
All next year we'll smuggle pancakes from IHOP so you can save some $$ on the 914 b'fasts. That'll cover a little of it.

Kim can take care of the orange jiuce but I wouldn't trust him with lemonade. (eeewww) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif)

It's a pretty car.

Thanks for your encouragement y’all…

I did some searching and calling around and here is what I found out about importing cars to the USA:

1. A 1974 car is exempt from certain but not all requirements for safety and emissions.
2. The car still has to meet EPA emissions (and California emissions) requirements this first time it is registered (then it is exempt from testing), so a GB code engine, might not meet the requirements as it is, unless a catalytic converter is installed.
3. Certain DOT safety provisions are mandatory. Safety glass, side door beams, bumper height, headlights and ‘anti-theft’ (key buzzer) provisions.
4. A Registered Importer (RI) MUST be hired and the contract shown to customs, before anybody will do anything. The car is imported to Oxnard, CA, then ground shipped to Oakland, CA where it is ‘federalized’…equipment changed out, certifications obtained, dyno tested.
5. All the German equipment will be GONE…a US windshield, a MPH speedo, sealed beam headlights…all those toys that make it a German car…that’s the point isn’t it?
6. Total costs including shipping and duties start at about $3500 and could easily go up if it doesn’t pass the first time. Of course, that this particular car does not currently run is a problem…

This RI I spoke with called the 914 a piece of____…he really hurt my feelings, but he is loser as I see it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) He was hot to advise me multiple time to ‘not bring a sandwich to the banquet…bring roastbeef’…his way of wanting me to import a $100000 AMG…not a 100,000th V-dubPorsche…

One thing that he surprised me with though FYI…is that he said that the 914 was BANNED from Switzerland, and has been for about 15 years…why?…because they are pieces of _____” cars…’everyone knows that”. Any truth to this by someone that knows (the banned part)? What other countries is the 914 banned?

Hmmph. Unless Bernard can make these problems go away…seems like to bring a German car in German form into the USofA…is not-likely by this middle class American…

Denied as the BradMeister likes to say.

I believe the Fed/DOT regs are on a rolling 25 year window. This means any 914 will not have to be Federalized by a registered importer. I'm sure you will probably have to pay some duties but I'd doubt too much.
