also keep in mind you have a certain amount of time to get the item out of customs. if you do not, you start paying a daily rate for them to hold it. so, if it is having problems being converted/passing tests, etc you will pay more.

I'd look for a different RI to do the import. Up here if the car is over 15 yrs old it is exempt from having to do any changes (except buses). If it is 25 yrs old it is exempt as an antique from taxes. Anyone can act as an importer, you just have to figure out the goverment hoops to jump thru. Also the smog issues sound California specific. Import it to a state that has less specific smog laws and then just transfer the title afterwards when you take it home.
Have Brad call his guy. He seems to know what/how to do it. Last resort, import it up here. I'll store it for you and you can come visit it here. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

So the year's are different -- I brought in a '70 from the terrorist-mad-cow-smog-friendly Canada. But really, the issue was sales taxes and so forth. All I did *have* to show was that it was a model that was legally importable into the US at the time of manufacture. And that was easy.
I don't actually know what "RI" stands for -- I did my research by first the web and then calling the relevant agencies. I had my docs in order at the border, and they collected their import tax. Again, all I had to pass were the crash/safety regs for the year of manufacture. Of course, in CA, you may also have to pass smog. kim. |

Bring it in as parts. Register it in another state without strick emmision laws. Why would a car that old have to pass federal emissions? Swap in a U.S. motor, test the car, put the euro motor back in. Bring it in as a grey market car. I think you can still do this but you just can't resell the car. Hey for what it's worth.... Do yourself a favour. Drive it around Europe before you ship it. It's the only way you're going to get to drive a 914 around europe on a long vacation. Hertz doesn't have 914s.
Unless of course you do the factory ship Porsche or BMW thing..... |

Oh - and never take just one anybody's advice - call a bunch of importers in a number of states.
We were given a $2000 quote for under the table asbestos removal - for a cash in hand job by un unliscenced plumbing firm (who said that our furnace was a time bomb). The licensed asbestos removal firm quoted $600 for a legitemate job, and it turns out our furnace is absolutely fine, and very safe (if a little inefficient) |

I used a translation serivce to translate the ad from the Greman website...so that you can read...somewhat what it indicated....here it is...although some words didn't translate too well...
Hello, you offer ran on a real rarity on a Porsche 914 2.0 with 100 HP the vehicle first 15000 km and are since the new purchase 1974 in families possession calculations available. I would swear to lets myself the slight mileage under oath moreover the nachvollziehen good at the condition the vehicle. Predominantly he did not stand is remained be are in the garage therefore its condition for its age very well littler blemishes naturally out of littler rust place under the doors at the Schwellerabdeckungen. (Schweller itself O.K.).In the intervals of the sleep eyes in the engine compartment to the right and to the left in the den Ecken.Radkästen,Kofferraumdeckel,Motorraumdeck stainless. The subsoil is O. K. door to the right and more quite rear fender became in the 70er after some park advice scissors newly varnished. (no accident). the remainder is original motor runs good, would have to be adjusted is however interior equipment original and like new. The vehicle is shuten down since 1999. New full expert opinion needs therefore and tüv a beforehand examination specifically is desired. Registration and questions gladly under Tel 0171,240,250,6. The vehicle is sold without guarantee as a handicraft enthusiast car. It concerns was probably the special model- (Sondermodell Edition), what exclusively for the US-market certainly levy ca. 1000 pieces. In the late 80's I was importing grey market Mercedes from Germany... there are many hoops that one must jump through to get a German vehicle to the US...but the most important is to align yourself with someone in Germany...a German national in the automobile business...things will work much smoother for you. BTW at the time we were importing the shipping cost to Buffalo NY was $525.00/car and the customs fees we 2% of the sale price...the conversions we done in Chicago...by our mechanic and documented by photos and a form provided by the customs people. My suggestion is that you do the papersork outside of california...along with the point of entry. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif) |

PCNA might be helpful. Especially if you can get someone keen on classic vehicles. Perhaps Klaus Parr, the archivist, might be helpful. Could Jeroen get the car running? Windshield would the the major change. Speedo, I would trade you mine if needed. Headlights may not even need changing depending on the type installed. I cannot think of anything else that would be needed.
Those importing 1970 & 1971 914's from Canada must have been reimporting USA cars. 914's were not officially imported into Canada until very late 1971. Up till then we individually imported our 914's from the US. There were very few 71's sold up here. The only sixes I know of were imported from the US by owners. DaveP |

Wonder how much it is to send it to Canada?
I have two customers with English buses. At least it would be in North America. I have a friend who is an British car restorer, if you want me to pick his brain let me know. |

Sounds to me like you make a deal with a fellow teener in Canada, they buy it, ship it to Canada, then sell it to you for a fee (small)
then import it from Canada. Grey Market cars arrive here all the time in the porsche world, look for a Grey market importer, they know the loopholes that are all legal, just not advertised. I was able to import my BMW from Germany that way, less money, got the car faster and didnt have to pay the only East Coast RI with my first born child. Rich |
