For those who aren't familiar, the Lone Pine Autocross is held annually at the abandoned air strip across the road from the former Manzanar camp right outside of Lone Pine, CA. Its a brutal event, mostly because the weather usually sucks. Its either too hot, too windy, or both. Also the condition of the tarmack is bad.

It is however a blast. Its one of thsoe events that you both love and hate at the same time. At this year's event the general consensus was "Lone Pine SUCKED, it was awesome!"

Dates are June 2-3, cost is $60 for two days, $40 for one.

Registration Forms are here.

Last year, the 914club made an appearance, with Howard and Allan participating.

Like I mentioned earlier, the beater challenge requires some preparation. Basically you have a budget of lets say $500 to acquire and race prep a car for the event. This is especially fun when multiple drivers share a single car. You can really compare driving skills and you get a ton of track time.

Track time is one of the big benefits of this event. Assuming you can withstand the weather, you get a LOT of laps in over the two days. Night-time runs are not sanctioned, but no one is going to stop you.

So start saving those bald tires!!!

Gawd, there is an Oxymoron if I ever heard one. A 996 afraid of cowshit. And a tequilauped Bakertuckian with his boyfriend.

The hotel in Lone Pine was great ..... camping at the "track" sucked blew ... if it hadn't have been for the blue flame boost from Joe's chili, I woulda prolly been blown away.

Informal poll:

1.) Will a Corvette be better at breaking cow pies than a 996?

2.) Will a Corvette be faster with Mayo on the tires?

3.) Will a 996 stick better with Miracle Whip on the tires?

4.) Will Headrage's lights stay on?

I was right near Lone Pine in july.

Coso Junction - quite a scary place in the middle of the night when you are from NJ and dont know what to expect.

ON an up note, J41 right off of 395. Amazing hillclimb! Make sure you have some really detailed maps when travleing up and into the Nat'l Forest. I got lost in there for about 4 hours on a rainy night.

I'll be there sure you bet. Will be running in the Hertz class, unless we want to build something to run in the POS 100. Take charge, Tony. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Just had a flashback to the the team that used JB Weld to keep the spark plug in their Corsica or whatever. Just had another flashback to the gas powered margarita blender. I've been having a lot of flashbacks.....Pass the Miracle Whip.

Trekkor: you have to come this time. Photoshopped pictures don't cut it this time.

Howard: When I find out more about the event I'll start working on organizational stuff.

In the mean time, I know that there is a group here putting together a beater challenge car, but last time I saw it, it was still sitting in the weeds. I think they need competition...

It would have been more realistic if he had used the "General Lee".

We weren't going for the "Beater Class". If you have more than 5 drivers in one car, you can form your own class .... that was the ticket with the Corvette. We were going for one years bragging rights. Also it was to make SKline put up or shut up about how fast he is.

We're going to call our class "The Cassadores Runs".

Slits: I remember now. I thought the name was going to be "We've Got the Runs" but your title is more subtle...

That poor vette is going to be completely trashed. And thats the spirit!

Ask the "regulars" if they remember the BIG fire (IMG:style_emoticons/default/WTF.gif) (that crappy wind kicked in and blew our tumble weed, log and race gas bonfire everywhere) about 15 years ago. Or the shotguns (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ar15.gif) , dirt bike drag races at midnight etc. Lone Pine can be lots of fun. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer3.gif)
Back then they didn't have slaloms on the two LONG straights (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif)

Toyota recently had some fun at Lone Pine filiming a commercial...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D81uh6I-2Q4

Lone Pine is a blast. Its the variety of people that make it fun. There's the guys who show up in the half million dollar RV towing a trailered Ferrari, then there's my friends from UCSB driving a beat up oldsmobile with the spark plugs JB welded in place.

Slits has a 1994 Tercel that he's going to bring out. I think it should be made into a Tercel speedster, or "Terdster"
