So, Andy....2312 (six) DID have the"system". If so, this is the first 914/6 to respond with the evap system ( nice car too).

Verify please, so I'm not considered a bozo again.

OK, little different tack here about the "canister". Whether or not you have it doesn't matter. But, after 34 years on my car, is this just an ornament? or does it still have useful enviro features? Mine looks nice, but does it do anything?

Does it need recharging? (can't replace it, which is rich!). Does it still retain its original values, aftr 34 years?

I'm not Greenpeace member, so I don't really care - just curious.

BTW, I'm sure most of you have noticed this. Old cars STINK! Even when they are running properly. Without contemporary emissions crap - they stink. I kind of like it - another source f being "vinatge", and I guess 914's ARE vintage these days.

So, stink is acceptable for a vintage car.

it's the one that is currently on ebay. the canister is hooked up and the car is supposedly all original, so, yes, i'm pretty sure it's authentic ...

i think so. the active ingredient is charcoal, which *will* get saturated at one point. 34 years of use has probably left little filtering power in there ...

i'm sure they can be opened up and refilled, if you really care ...

The charcoal isn't so much a filter, as it is a storage recepticle. Charcoal has humongous surface area, external and internal, and will hold the gasoline vapor until the car is run again, at which time it is cleared out by the air from the blower. I seem to very vaguely recall reading that the move to the engine compartment was at least partly to add engine heat to the blower air to improve the purge of the vapor.

Now the blower air is unfiltered, so I suppose it could become contaminated over the decades with junk from that source. On US cars in the 70's, there was actually a replaceable fiberglas filter in the bottom of the charcoal cannister. I used to replace mine every 20k miles or so. It cost about $1. The dealer told me I was the ONLY one he knew of who actually replaced that thing!

Ours, obviously, are sealed. It would be interesting to section a derelict one and see what it looks like inside, particularly at the end where the blower connects. If anyone has one, I'd be glad to section it....

Could there be a 914 owner alive who actually replaced the cannister at 50,000 miles?

As I think about it, there probably are a few dealers who did for those rare owners who were having their car serviced at the dealership.

So...., if this was a scheduled maintenance event, might there be some dealers sitting on some new ones? Anyone know about the availability of these? Not that I really care so much.

Would really be interesting to see a "donor" cut in half, though.

My forme 1.7 car, 1970, # 1600 (approx it was 1600 something) was a us spec car. i even got a letter from Porsche confirming it was a US import. It had no can, no provision for hoses, no inlet on het oil bath air cleaner, not port on teh fan house. no holes in the rockers to accept rhe hoses to the rear.

it was supposed that in this early production (build date was Oct, or Nov 1969 per door sticker, and it was US spec) (ie meets Federal standards) some cars that were made for non-USA delievery had a US sticker placed on them, and shipped anyay, maybe becuase of demand???

i had to jump thru hoops to get it smogged back when the nazi like state of california required smog testing on 1970 cars. now only 1976 and newer are smogged.

so yes, some US spec 1.7's did not have the cannister system. no holes inthe metal to accpet the hoses..

my 72 has the hoses, but I noted that some of th ehoses that come out of the rockers are split open from age, NOT GOOD,as this is a source for intake air, that bypasses the air filter!! and it is down low, in the wheel well, good place for road dirt to get sucked into your engine, Yuck!!!
