Nope, the car I went and looked at was a very clean 2.7 conversion (i think it was a 2.7, that's how it felt).
based on what I read in that e-bay add, the guy selling the car on e-bay is full of BS or he just absolutely no clue about porsches or he left out a bunch of very important details about his engine, I don't know which. I've e-mailed him trying to get more information. All it takes to get 290 hp out of a 180 hp engine is a chip? since when did they put 3.2 liter engines in SCs? (ok, maybe he did a short stroke conversion). since when did they put motronic on SC engines? OK, maybe he had it converted. Bottom line is, that sounds like a 205 hp (max) engine to me. how the heck did he get 290 from that? 3.3 seconds 0 to 60? BS. 170 mph top speed? BS, 914s aint stable at that speed and would swap ends, even if he did have enough hp and he probably doesn't. Unless he drastically changed the gearing in that 915 it would hit redline at around 145 (if he could get there which he prolly can't). |

Sammy, what the hell are you talking about!
I have kids tell me all the time that they can get 200hp out of a beetle engine and they can do it for a buck and a half! Hell man, the same kid will tell me that his brother's friend's buddy stuck a turbo off of an oldsmobile GN on his bug and did a 6 second 1/4! I'm going to get this kid to build me a 3.2, he should be able to get me 600hp easy! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) |

Be careful with those "Olds GN" turbos. They are extremely rare (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool_shades.gif)

QUOTE(Sammy @ Mar 8 2003, 04:37 PM) Bottom line is, that sounds like a 205 hp (max) engine to me. rule of thumb for carbs/FI engines (without turbo or supercharger) is 10hp per 100cc. so, for a 3.2 that would be 320hp. soooo, 290hp out of a 3.2 is possible, in fact olav's 3.2 has some 275hp if i'm not mistaken ... He states that the engine is out of a 911SC and the only performance change he mentions is a performance chip.
An SC engine makes either 180 or 205 hp depending on which version. The fact that he installed the chip eliminates the possibility of it being carbed or CIS (or slide valve injection). So, I conclude it is a 3.2 out of a mid 80's carrera and not out of an SC. That engine in stock form puts out around 207 hp, maybe a little more but not much. rule of thumb doesn't work here if we're talking stock, that rule is more geared towards race prepped engines. how many NA standard street engines has porshe produced that had 275+ hp? (besides 3.6 liter 993 and 996 engines). What did Olav do to his 3.2 to get 275 hp? I'd bet it isn't even close to stock. So called performance chips are questionable as far as how much they actually help, many very knowledgeable people have suggested that they are good for less than a 10 hp increase. Suppose this guy did spend a fortune trying to build a 290 hp 3.2. if he did, why would he be so darned proud of his chip and not mention the other $20k worth of engine modifications it would take to get there? The add makes it sould like the engine is stock. maybe I should just be quiet and let everyone believe my 3.0 liter has 290 hp too (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) |

i did not, in any way, try to make this guy look better (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
and yes, the 10hp per 100cc is the MAX for a aircooled engine without turbo or supercharger and without cutting engine life down to one day on the track. but it can be done. rich bontempi's 1.8 has around 180 horses, i've seen several 2.0 liters with 200+ hp ... i too think the guy is talking BS (IMG:style_emoticons/default/fighting19.gif) |

The guy might be full of BS, but it's possible it's not his fault.
The car's previous owner could have lied through his teeth to the current owner, and he just didn't know any better. Can you believe it? Some people buy a car to drive it, and don't really care what size the pistons are, or what gear set is in the tranny. -Rusty |

NA 100 bhp per liter is mighty hard to come by. Factory motors that deliver the goods are few and far between. The Honda 2000 & Ferrari 360 WTF are the only ones that come to mind.
Both achieve these numbers somewhere North of 8k rpms. That's the hard way. Here's the method I use: My 2.7, for instance.....stock 165 hp Webers + 20 hp headers + 20 hp Solex cams +20 hp 9.7:1 pistons +20 hp Polished ports +20 hp MSD +10 hp (being realistic here) Me doing the tuning -5 hp (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) BINGO 100 hp per liter. Piece O cake. I also have a 10 inch Johnson. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |
