for each full revolution of the crank (360 deg), how many power-strokes do you have on a 4-cylinder boxer?
1? or, to be more precise, how many OPEN intake valves do you have per full revolution of the crank? (ignore overlap, only full open valves). Andy |

QUOTE(SirAndy @ Nov 14 2003, 03:37 PM) for each full revolution of the crank (360 deg), how many power-strokes do you have on a 4-cylinder boxer? 1? 2 the four strokes are (officially) Suck - Squeeze - Bang - Blow. in that order. each cylinder fires every two revolutions of the crankshaft == 1 revolution of the camshaft. so you get half as many of each stroke in a crankshaft rev as there are cylinders. (4 cyl == 2 intake, 2 compression, 2 power, 2 exhaust). you get you cylinders' complement in a complete revolution of the camshaft ( == 2 crank revs). and since a power stroke 'makes power' over about 120 crankshaft degrees, this is why 6's are so smooth - you have 1 cylinder making power at all times. |
