Nice escape! Its not often that CA's finest miss a revenue generating opportunity for the state.

When I was 16 (in the mid 80's), Santa Maria Police did the same to me and my best friend. We were stupid (like MikeZ but not retarded - j/k) and we dragged from Broadway & Main down Broadway TOWARDS the police station. I was on my motorcycle and I was racing a slammed hopped up '64 VW.

I got in the turn lane to go left and turn around to mock my friend when he signals the rollers behind us.

Getting off that ticket was almost as lucky as not getting thrown in jail in Oceano on prom night.

I've got Central Coast stories......

Great story, guys.... good stuff...

In 8 years of ownership, I've only been pulled over once in my 914... 4 times in my VW THING... what's up with that?

I seldom go the speed limit in the 914.

Well, rewind to this past August - I was en route to somewhere, mid day... so the interstate system west-of-boston is reasonably clear. So are the on-ramps. (oh boy). The on-ramp to I-495 from my town is a fun one - 3 slightly-banked alternating sweepers with straights in between - because it's a fast one. (see satellite map). It's all gas.

Right, Rich? (r_towle)

So, exiting the last sweeper, I put my left blinker on to merge, and at this point, my speed is in excess of 90mph. Imagine my horror to see that the car I'm about to "merge" in front of is a state trooper. MA troopers are known to not have such a great sense of humor. Shit.

I immediately put on my right blinker when we make eye contact - his finger pointing right at my head, and pull over.

Fishing for my billfold, I realize that it's amiss - in the trunk of the VW THING back at home because i went running that morning. Shit.

I did have my registration though. Phew.

I explain the situation with my billfold - he doesn't even ask me if I knew why I was pulled over... being that it was quite obvious. He wrote down my license number, which I almost remembered in it's entirety. Came back to the car a few moments later and said: "what brand wheels are these? they aren't stock, are they?" (I have revolution RFX's) and then he asked if the car was a 1.7, 1.8 or 2.0L... So I told him it as a modified 2.0, and the suspension & brakes were all done up right, too.. and "therefore, this exit ramp is no problem"...

Mister Trooper replied "I know... Oh... I know.... your timing just sucks" (with a little twinkle in his eye).

What he said next was what is truly amazing: "have a nice day, Gregory. Keep the rubber side down..."

and off I went, winding out each gear because the trooper probably wanted it that way.

90+ on an interstate on-ramp, no ticket. Our blessed 914's prevail once again.
