I was looking through the PET catalogs for the early 911/912s and later 911s and saw that there is a ring gear and pinion shaft listed with a ratio of 7:27 or 3.857:1 which is taller than the 914's stock 7:31 (4.429:1) ratio. Will this ring gear and pinion shaft work in the 914's 901 tranny?

YES... The ring and pinion gearing can be changed in a 901 box.
its not however cheap. The lash will need to be reset. figure 500$ plus parts. here lies the problem with a 901 box on a V8 (IMHO) yes it will work. but you'll spend 3 grand rebuilding it. more if you change the ring and pinion or add a limited slip Once you make a serious $5,000 commitment on your transmission how long do you want it to last? you can get away with them if you avoid 1st gear and do 2nd gear starts. (many V8 guys lock out first gear) but after you decided to drop 5grand into the tranny you will need to consider if you should be spending that same money on a bigger model that will last longer and take the abuse better. thats what is not being said above in this thread and the reason people are replying to you with such strong terms. brant |

Jerry, so the 7:27 ring and pinion is a bolt-in replacement for the stock 7:31 ring and pinion? [/quote] The sporto ring and pinion do work in a 901 trans. I would not spend much money building a 901 either. But if you want a taller final drive ratio that is one way to get one. Jerry |

I appreciate the feedback. The turbo kit is just a possibility and it would surely pose other problems like high engine compartment temperatures. I found a dyno graph for the VR6 motor that shows you can get 182 whp with just a few relatively inexpensive mods like this one with a "Neuspeed intake, wires, chip, custom exhaust with cat" and that brings the estimated 0-60 time to around six seconds which should still be plenty of fun.
