A pair of these will be on their way to Felix shortly for installation and testing with the HID headlights. They are made of acrylic and should withstand heat and UV.

She only brought in 6 lenses, none of which will be sold, so they are considered samples, she got through okay, though they did ask her about them. Probably a good thing she didn't ahve 200 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Big thanks to T H O M A S today who helped me blast a couple lenses. The completely fogged lens will make a nice replacement for a regular turn signal lens, and the partially fogged will be good for a euro style turn signal. Next I'm going to try dipping these in amber turn signal dye.

The euro-blasted lens is off a bit. The unblasted part is too big and at a little bit of an angle. I think a blasting jig is in order.

I set up one of the fogged lenses with a set of LEDs. The top portion is illuminated by an array of superbright amber LEDs. The bottom is illuminated by a lensed 5 watt Luxeon Star LED (brightest LED made).

The fogging of the lens does a good job of keeping the elements hidden.

2 questions:

1) what is this amber turn signal dye of which you speak? Does it work on glass?
2) WTF is that sign behind the pix of the lenses?!?!?! That some EE humor or something?

Nice looking lenses T. I'm down for a set too.

Kapt.: 1) I think its just going to be transparent amber paint, maybe with a clearcoat depending on how well it holds up.
2) That sign is no joke, its a real metal sign and says "WARNING HIGH VOLTAGE DEATH ON CONTACT WITH ANTENNA." Bondo found it at a junkyard that sells a lot of commercial and military surplus stuff.

Geoff: Not sure how far the Luxeon will throw light. The lens that I have on it produces an oval pattern similar to a headlight. 5 watts of white LED light is really quite a bit, especially with the high color temperature. I doubt it would do much good as a driving light or fog light, but its defintiely a LOT more visible than a euro incandescent bulb. An array of 10 or so could be put in each turn signal bucket, for headlamp use, but at $23 each, that would be expensive. Also, at the full 5 watts output power they are only rated for ~500 hours of life before they start dropping in light output. There are other brands I'm looking at which have longer lifetimes. I'm waiting for a sample from Cree of their latest super high output white LED.

Not yet... I'm working on the driver electronics for these LEDs still. The setup in the pictures uses lab power supplies, which I can't easily take outside. (rack mounted).

I'll see if I can hook up some resistors and mount them somehow. The light output from these LEDs is way more than the stock bulbs.
