I think Jake would know the answer to this but you have to sign up on his forum http://forums.aircooledtechnology.com .

the '75 1.8L came in two versions:

EC = USA spec, 76HP @ 4800 rpm, 7.3:1 compression, EFI (L-Jetronic)
AN = Euro spec, 85HP @ 5000 rpm, 8.6:1 compression, dual weber carbs

a good article on what is needed to mate the T4 to a T1 transmission is located here:
http://www.tunacan.net/t4/howto/starting/

the easiest way to get more HP out of the 1.8L is to improve "breathing", especially on the exhaust side.

and you can always add a turbo or compressor.

You may have to shave a little off the inside of your bell housing to fit the

flywheel, I think it was 1966 and before but don't hold me to that..been a long

time. The later trans has the clearance for the FW, like the guys said above

sign up for Jakes forum, dosen't cost a thing and he should (will) have the

answer for you.

late bug gearboxes will work with the early 215mm bus flywheels IIRC. the problem is that the 914 flywheels don't line up with the starter ring gears so use a early (72-74) one, it must be a type4 bus engine.
you might have to adapt your throwout bearing setup to the later style also.

for hp increase? get a engine kit from Jake to go to a 2056 120hp engine!

Nine hours? Oh well... Fer some reason, I thought you had linked to the table of engines on the Tunacan site.

And frankly, it's a lot easier to check the info there than going through signing up on Jake's board and asking a very FAQ. (Signing up over there isn't bad per se, but the most basic conversion info is there on the Tunacan page and you don't have to bother anyone else to get it...)

i don't think the 914 trans will work in your bug based speedster because the 914 trans is for a mid-engined car and the bug trans is a rear engined car. gets to the old problem of 1 speed forward and 5 speeds reverse, that is, the trans turns the wrong way.

Just curious, what did the speedster replica cost you there (in $ US, as most of us can't do the conversion)? Was it new or used when you got it? Did it come in from the US, or Europe? And, as an American who has worked abroad, I'm impressed with your command of the English language. And welcome aboard! Hope you end up with a hot little almost-356. -C.H.

Not to long ago I read about a kit to convert the 901 trans to work with a bug.

A new tail piece and I believe instructions and hardware to flip the ring.

to use the 914 901 you will have to flip the ring gear and change it a 911rear nose cone. Then fab up a shifter for it. There are a few websites that show you how out there. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif)
