current color of car is white, not too sure if I'll keep the outside of the car that color, but I do know I'll be repainting the engine compartment white (much easier to see due the light reflecting upon the white)
Would Por-15 in white be a good paint? I want something durable (powdercoating is out of the question, LOL) |

Paint it just like you would paint the outside of the car.
We just did a engine compartment/trunk. It ran the owner 1200$ for labor/paint. It ran him 2k for us to make the engine compartment NICE prior to it going to the painter. This involved welding/cutting/grinding... I wanted a street rod clean engine compartment. We nailed it... hook line and sinker. Do it right Mike. B |

So anyone know if Terrance is getting that roller??
I need to repair the engine shelf from the butchered A/C job my car originally had. QUOTE Do it right Mike. I figured now would be the best time to do a kick-ass job on the car, it'll be rolling testbed/showcase for some of my parts as well as Tonys cage work and I don't to be embarrased showing off any parts of the vehicle. I've never had a nice so this is my chance to make a bitchen car (even with the "rice" rims, LOL) |

And while you are at it, you may as well paint the engine hole bright orange too.

Just one of the many things we removed prior to paint/bodywork..
Sound pad tabs removed. All associated brackets/tabs/bolts for the rear torsion springs and trunk welded up/filled (Camp914 strut kit to be welded in) 4cyl engine cross bar mounts on frame removed/welded/smoothed. B |

That is one reason why I painted my engine compartment, because I was sick of it not being clean. And now all I deal with is DUST!! I hate dust.. I need to clean my engine bay... 4 day weekend, ya..
I used regular paint, 500 degree heat, but regular paint should be fine because it probably doesnt get over 200 in there.. The paint I got was engine paint, and it matched my color perfect.. Chevy orange, engine paint.. Although I bet you would want something a little better than that.... I do have to do some touchups with paint that I sprayed on, because my Intake box scratched up some of the walls, and stuff, Por 15 might stay better.. dono.. Andrew |

Problem is:
You cant use brake cleaner or any engine degreaser when you use "spray can paint" It will wipe it right off. This stuff doesnt get hurt by the use of brake cleaner unless you soak it in the brake cleaner for extended periods of time. So... be careful cleaning your setup. I know whatcha mean by 'clean' though. Ask around.. I make people clean their cars before they bring them to me (if I have to be underneath their car for any reason). I wish we had more people that thought like you (I want my engine compartment clean) B |

What about spraying down the trunks and underbody and maybe if the engine compartment can take the heat, with a certain type of truck bed liner? I've seen this done once on a 914 and it made a lot of sense (to this nieve one). Kind of looks cool too.

The problem with Rhino Liner type products on a 914: if any moisture gets under the coating.. or if it traps moisture while they shoot it... you wont SEE any of the rust occuring beneath the bed liner. I have been using Rhino Liner in my trucks since the early 90's.. any time A piece peeled up from dragging engines across it... their was rust underneath. The have to scuff the area to be covered which removes some of the paint.
I would rather see the rust starting to happen than cover it with something that could hide it until it was terminal. Something that we do around the shop: We pull all the tar paper from the floorboards so we can inspect them and stop/slow down any rusting that is happening in the floorboards... again.. the tar paper holds water that you cant see and causes rust to form under it. Same with the undercoating used on most of the cars... scrape it off some time and find out what is going on underneath. You wuold be surprised at what you may find. b |

Bradillio,
How did you (or MikeD or Britain) remove the tabs for the engine pad? It looks very clean. What color paint is it supposed to be? Man I have a lot of work to do. Maybe on Friday I'll actually touch the car! |

I cut the "bendy" part off with a cutoff wheel and then used a hand grinder to grind the remains (where they spot welded it to the chassis). I would only stay on the remains for a few seconds with the hand grinder until I noticed the metal start to peel up after I got thru the spot welds.. you can easily watch for this while using the hand grinder. The spot welded piece will become red hot and fall off leaving you with a nice smooth surface.

I want that roller. Still want to see where we can cut the thing up. I don't think my parents/neighbors would want that thing near my house. hehe. If we can cut the thing up in one day and have it disposed of useless parts, It would be most ideal. I'm gonna pull my engine soon and paint my engine bay too. Also doing the rust repair stuff.

Think 4 inch electric hand grinder with a grinding disk on it. Sears sells them.

What kind of paint does he use in the engine bay? That looks awesome on there. I will be able to make good progress on mine once I move into a new place. I already took the tabs off for the sound pad and I need to finished them off with the grinder.

He uses whatever paint you want him to use. Typically PPG or whatever was shot on the outside of the car.
