Hopefully Dr914 reads this (and other informative threads on this site) and updates his book to include these useful clairfications/observations.

A 911 starter is a better replacement, 70-82 year. One problem also possible is
a poor contact between plugs and pins on the relay board behind driver. Corrosion
can and does exist there to a point of poor conductivity. If you see green powdery
material, thats it. Cleaning and spreading the pins on the board is the cure. Dimitri

When you replace the starter there is gotcha that has gotten a few folks. One of the bolts undoes from inside the engine bay. The end on the starter has a retaining flange that makes it impossible to get a wrench on it.

Dimitry, good point and I had already cleaned the relay board and connectors two months ago, still looking good.

Rain does get in there...poor design. I'm going to make a rubber washer for the top screw...hopefully that will help a bit.

Also even though the top bolt is accessed through the engine compartment, I hope it's not a bugger...we'll see.
