My 914 needs new tread. I have 195-50 Yokohama AVS intermediate tires (circa 1999) that stuck great to the road.

per Tirerack. Yoko's new AVS, the ES-100 does not stick like the old AVS, but does wear better, and better wet traction. Not a trade off I want. i want the handling i had on the old AVS's, hang turns or die.

So I see the Sumitomo HTR-Z and was told by Tire rack it is much closer to the old AVS in handling (ie sticky tire).

Any experience with the HTR-Z? any other recommendations for what i want?

1999 AVS wear = 160, traction A
new AVS wear = 280, Traction AA
HTR-Z wear = 160, Traction A

I would usually get about 40-50K miles from a set of the old sticky tires, all four wear even, no rotation ever needed.

Tire Rack don't carry 'em, but Falken Azenis are what you want. http://www.discounttiredirect.com does carry 'em. There are other hard-compound tires that stick about as well, but the Azenis is grippy and relatively cheap! Not much wet grip once the tread is gone, but that's true of most tires. They're heavy and loud, and they don't last all that long. But they really really grip well!
