north of orick on the 101 take the first right after you go out of orick. the road has 2 names. one is "lady bird road". the full distance drops you down the backside of Redwood Natl Park to 169. the first 12 miles or so is a paved 1 1/2 lane road, very busy curves wise and a excellent road surface. after the first 12 mi it turns into gravel/dirt. my son didn't care for the "rally" experience. driving 299 from willow creek to redding at 5am in the rain and clouds/mist was not a whole lot of fun. once again the jetta performed flawlessly.
