generally, all that is needed is a car that is in very good mechanical shape (no leaks, good brakes, battery straped down), a helmet (can be borrowed, motorcycle helmets okay), and around $30.

DO IT!

Secrets of Solo Racing is a great book explaining car prep, driver prep, what to bring to the event, etc.

I've just started doing AX with the local SCCA. I did a novice school last month, which included lots of instruction and practice time. Well worth the $50 fee. Also, SCCA has a novice class for n00bies like us. You'll get an instructor to ride with you for your first AX or two, plus someone to help you walk the course and give pointers.

I'm hooked, it's a really good time with some great people. I picked up a helmet on Ebay.

Sign up and go for it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumb3d.gif)
