Hello all,
Now that the fury of school and work are beginning to subside for my annual multi-week-vacation, I'm gearing up to continue work on my car. As I reinstall the engine in the coming weeks, I want to take care of the lack of oil temperature/pressure measurement in my car (especially with the 'new' mildly beefed-up engine). My car (a '72) never had an oil temp guage (nor sender to the best of my understanding) but it does have the traditional oil pressure sender and idiot light dealie. I'd like to be able to monitor actual numbers (okay, well not numbers.. perhaps 'variability beyond an idiot light' is what I was gunning for) and I don't know the best way to do this. I have a custom center console that I've constructed that can house the gauges (or I can construct a different place to put them.. such as where the old heater controls are, since I won't be using those anymore..) In any event, placement and size of gauges isn't as important as finding a reliable and efficient way of handling the problem. Thoughts? Suggestions? I'm hoping to order them in the next 24 hours so they'll be there by the time I get home. Thanks! |

It looks kinda clunky. I think there's a vdo sender that has two outputs.

Why couldn't you just install the oil temperature sender in the same location the OEM sender was located, below the engine in the TACO plate. The oil pressure guage sender could be installed in the same port the OEM idiot light sender is located, just add a 6" piece of tubing and a tee fitting.
Wouldn't this work? I am sure you can make it look nice with some effort. Cheers Kerry |

bus boys lists a kit for that (hose extension) but it is shown as NLA.

I guess part of the problem is that I don't know what the original sender looks like, where it fit, and if I can just 'plug' one into my motor (for example, does it take a special taco plate?)
Looking at the links now, just got home from the midnight showing of ROTK. |

Go to aircooled.net. John has every sender combo imaginable as well as the extension to relocate the stock sender, like when using a mallory. Just don't try typing in more than one word in the search or it blows up :-)

Okay, I have 3 different vendors now, and still no clue what I'm looking for. Where does the sender go (I've heard no less than 4 different locations: the drainplug, the taco plate, the same port as the pressure sender, and as part of a dipstick package).. beyond that, I'm still confused. Is there only 1 type of taco plate or do I need to buy a new taco plate along with the sender? Anyone have an idea if the above link from cb will work in my case?
I appreciate the help in pointing me in the right direction for vendors, but I'm still completely lost. Even a link to another site would be fine, but I didn't have any luck searching the popular forums for an answer. |

I think that part of the problem is that no one makes a sender that has the same threads as the original sender (located on the top of the block near the oil cooler). So different vendors have come up with different solutions. One popular solution (VDO I know and maybe others) is a piece of hose with different fittings on each end. One that matches the original sender (male) and a female fitting that matches the modern sender. I think that Brad once suggested that the hose for a grease gun may have the correct fittings. These can be purchased at your local auto parts store. You may also be able to have a hose made at a parts place or hydraulics place. Just pick a sender and take it and your old sender to the shop and tell them what you want. Hope that helps -Pete |

Actually the VDO senders do have the correct threads, but the size of the sender is such that it won't fit next to the dist (this is the top of the case location).
I personally purchased the VDO 80psi guage, the VDO 80psi sender with warning light, and the relocation hose (braded) from Aircooled.net You will have to bend a 10mm wrench to install the relocation hose properly, but other than that everything worked great. That will take care of the pressure gage. For the temp you have a couple of options: If you have the proper taco plate (that has a threaded hole in it for a sender) then you can buy the 300* VDO oil temp sender that has the 10 x 1mm threads. If you don't have the proper taco plate, then you can get the sender that comes with a nut and just make a hole in your sump plate and bolt it in...or you can get the dipstick sending unit $$$...personally I like using the correct taco plate. http://www.aircooled.net/new-bin/catsearch...ent2=L&perpage= I hope that clears some things up...
