Plaid seat inserts.......was this a dealer option or all aftermarket?

I know they were available on the VW bus of that era, but what about the 914?

Special order or one offs?

Plaid is pictured in factory sales brochures. I'm pretty sure it was a dealer option, not aftermarket.

99% sure it was factory. Dealers won't go to the trouble of changing seats

Are they the same patterns that came on the westys?

Factory, 76 for sure, ?75.
Often color keyed with body color with green, red, yellow and B&W plaid to the best of my recollection.

Very cool when pristine. Ugly when stained and worn...

A large range of plaid fabrics were available in boith 1975 and 1976, factory only, not dealer installed. I have a few photos of what I have come across on my webage:

Hi Jeff,

Add these Grey/Black plaid seats from an original 1976 914 here in MI.

They are different from the Westy plaids although the yellow is pretty close.

Wow! I thought the plaid interiors were common knowledge on the late 914's.

When they first came out, I hated them - probably because they clashed with the plaid pants I wore during that period! And the plaid jacket too.

As time has gone by, I appreciate & actually LIKE them. They're a period piece. Anyone remeber houndstooth inserts in early 70's 911's? I liked those from the start. Anyone remeber the raspberry 911's of '73? Hated it & still do, but it's a part of Porsche history.

I particularly like the matching plaid interior for orange 914's. Of course red-based colors strike a note with me.

Yeah, they're pretty cool these days, if clean.

Well I searched thru the threads and didn't come across any posts specifically about the plaids so I thought I'd ask.

I found a weaver who is local to me who does tartans and I'm going to get her to make some of my family tartan for the 71. It's Gemini Blue so I think it would match pretty well.

She could probably match any of the plaids if she has a reference sample with the grid shown with a ruler.

Napier Tartan
