(IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Hello all... I am brand new to 914 World and just aquired my 1st 914. A 99.9% original, unmolested 914-6 that has been stored most of its life. What a find. Anyway, I would like to see if some people in the same area I am in could recommend a local shop to get her all tuned up and running at peak. I am located in the Bay Area of California as well as I am in the Sacramento area quite often also. I appreciate everyones help. Thanks in advance, Jim |

Sportech in Campbell Ca 408-377-8055 Mark is the owner and has been working on 914s for 20+ years. He has built/refurbished many 914s of his own over the years.

Well, if you can't bring it down to Santa Maria for The Cap'n and Ben (who has been working on 914/6s since 1969) to work their magic, the next choice would be Rich Bontempi's High Performance House in Redwood City. Oh, BTW, (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.png)

Nice purchase! Lets hear the story, how did you find it? I see it still has the original blue plates. What year is that one?

Well.... and what a find it was. I was searching for a 914-6 for sometime, hoping for a original unmolested one which I knew might take a while. One day while searching craigslist I saw a new posting for a 914-6 with very little information listed, I got excited and tried contacting the guy by email over and over with no response, he would reply to the craiglist ad to everyone emailing him about the car because he was overwhelmed with responses.
After many unsuccesful attempts at emailing him I tried one more angle to get him to respond to me. <$$$> Well, by total luck he responded with a phone number and I called him and set up the viewing the next day, he was around 1 1/2 hours away and when I arrived it was tucked away in the garage as you see in the picture since 1998. The guy was super nice and really did not want to part with it, he had gotten it in 1998 from a personal friend of his who also had not driven it much. His friend had gotten it from the original owner who just so happens to now be a 74 year old man who lives in Campbell not too far from my place of business.... I was able to get all this information because included was all the original paperwork, owners manuals, records and even the original factory tool kit that had been kept with the car. Yes I was told those are the original license plates? She is a beauty, absolutley NO rust, I assume because of all the sitting in garages over the years. I have only had her since the 20th of this month, 1st thing I did was installed 4 fresh new tires and now looking for the right shop to get her all serviced and tuned up the best possible as well as replace some worn shifter bushings so she will shift more normal. My plans are to keep it as completely original as possible and perserve this rare find. Thanks very much, Jim (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) |

One thought ... Has anyone delt with a shop in Santa Clara called Precision Motor works? Located off Saratoga and Stevens Creek Blvd. This shop was recommended to me by a fellow Porsche nut.
Thanks so much everyone. ~Jim (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif) |

I am somewhat confused. Your profile information on the screen says that you are in El Dorado Hills which is quite a jog from the Bay Area for a car you don't know well. Is the car there and you here? If you are here in the central valley or foothills area one of the best mechanics I know is the owner of IPB Autosport on 12th and C street. He is a very quick 914 pilot and a heck of a nice guy. His number is 916-453-1465 and his name is Ron Kain...

I have a home in El Dorado Hills as well as one in the Bay Area, I have a business in the Bay Area and tend to be there a few days a week. The car currently is located in the Bay Area. Thanks much, Jim (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) |

Bontempi is a 914 specialist. He knows these cars inside and out. Third the recommendation for him.
I've used Ken's and Don Wise's shops in the past, no complaints about either. Tony Heyer ("higher") at Heyer Performance in Mountain View is great. Straightforward, no BS, perhaps a bit overly-biased toward factory parts. He was my mechanic when I still took my car to a mechanic. He used to be one of the Garretson bunch way back when, and Bruce Anderson used to take his wife's 944 to Tony. Bob Grigsby at RMG Enterprises in Sunnyvale is where we take Lisa's taildragger. Bob is absolutely great--again, no BS, and perhaps a little over-biased toward factory parts. --DD |

Thanks very much, Jim (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) Jim, There are a few of us up here in the East Sacramento Suburbs that would love to meet you and see your new car... You might like seeing ours as well. As for shifting more normal... Define "normal" (IMG:style_emoticons/default/av-943.gif) These things at their best shift pretty badly. By the way... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) I've been using Don for many years - he works on a lot of 914s and is very reasonable too. |

Don has my yellow, almost a six, in his shop right now. I've used both Don and Rich, talk to them yourself and pick the one that works for you.
Nice car. |
