Someone who is looking for these, this is a pretty good deal on them. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=620178 Just remember the problems Lavanaut had with his SSI's. A pretty bad split in the pipes inide the SS heat exchangers. At the stated price, it looks fishy to me... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/splat.gif) |

Not often that condition is found on the ss exchangers. Just have to take your chances.

So we now know of two......
Any tail draggers with the split tube problem? Might be as simple as a car with no rear muffler bracket which let the muffler bounce up and down while hung from the heat exchangers, and the pipe fractured from fatigue... Naw... Can't imagine a previous owner ever doing that.. Ken |

So we now know of two..... Ken Two out of how many? Given the available options, it might be worth the risk if you need those. They could probably be pressure tested before they were ever installed, preventing the grief that Lavanaut(nut) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) went through. |

Crap! Why are the good deals on 1.7 parts, not those for 2.0!!!
These are not interchangeable-1.7 to 2.0 are they? Allen |

The early 2.0 HEs had a straight rear section where the 1.7s had an upsweep. Provided that use use 2.0s with a 2.0 silencer and 1.7 with 1.7 everything swaps fine.

2.0 liter HE's require a 2.0 liter muffler hanger, and a 2.0 liter muffler
1.7/1.8 liter HE's require a 1.7/1.8 liter muffler hanger and a 1.7/1.8 liter muffler. Either system fits either motor, both bolt right up. Rich |

One thing I have noticed is that the 1.7/1,8 liter SS HE's have soft steel flanges that fall off from rust...so buyer beware.
