I saw a thread recently where someone reported experiencing steering wheel slop in their 4-cylinder car. The quick fix there was a $13 'shim'. Naturally as I researched the topic more I came to find that on a /6 the only fix is to replace the $200+ upper steering column bearing. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) A little more research and I found out that if the 'pressure spring' between the steering wheel and bearing is missing you'll experience slop as well. Please let that be it, I hoped...
So I pulled my wheel off and here's what I saw. Just to be sure that I'm clear on what I'm seeing here, it looks to me like there is no spring AND no bearing?! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/WTF.gif) That 'lip' at the bottom of the splines is part of the steering shaft. Anyone here familiar with this? Thanks |

looks like you are missing the bearing and c-clip...seems like it should be the same part number as the 70 four cylinder one.

there is a ring that should lift out ( magnet) and you will see the ball bearings.
On a -6 the wheel hub goes down through the ring(bearing race) and the spring ( you are missing) provdes the tension against the race providing no slop. The upper race in this picture is cracked Attached image(s) |

Ahhhh...so the bearing is in there! I was thinking it sat snugly around the steering shaft. It apperars I'm only missing the spring then ~ the most expensive vendor I found for that part was $1.53. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
I'll report back once I've got it installed with an update. Thanks! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) |

Replace the spring and upper spring clip. Upper spring clip is a dealer only item available from Germany. It has a 356 part number and has an oustounding price of about $35.

The last time I got one the best I could do was around $90! |

Mark, I don't see the clip you're refering to in the PET diagram...? The bearing I mentioned to is part #6, the spring is part #7. I'm guessing that the part you're alluding to is the same that Jeff was when he said 'there is a ring that should lift out'. I'm confused why it's not listed in the parts diagram though. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) Can you post the vendor for that spring? The last time I got one the best I could do was around $90! James, part 914.347.713.00 ~ AA has it for $1.21, Stoddard for $1.05, and then there's the outlandishly expensive (at $5 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)) Retro Motor Works. |

A-ha, here it is, found it at Stoddard (same link as in my above post). Diagram part #2, Porsche part # 695.347.725.00 for $45.20. Still though, it doesn't appear that the /6s came from the factory with this thing. Hmm...not sure what to do at this point. Maybe I'll try using the spring w/o the clip and if it works, great. If not... |

Yes, that is the support ring I was talking about. It must be in place into the inside of the bearing. It is not split so it will spread out to the inside of the bearing. The spring then compresses on it to hold the assembly tight. All 911's and 356 had this part installed but it never showed up the the 914-6 parts book.
The price you have is retail. Hennessey Porsche 888-416-7053 will give you the best deal around $35 but you will have to wait to come from Germany. |

I put a magnet on what I think is the bearing jacket/housing to see if there was a separate piece that would pull out, but there wasn't. This shit is confusing. I'm going to just pick up the spring and see if it works.
QUOTE I doubt its oem as stated, but should work. Actually the guys at Sierra Madre sell quality stuff in my experience, everything I've ordered which was listed as OEM or NOS has shown up perfect and still in the original parts bags. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Thanks again for the help, Reid |

Got the spring from Sierra Madre (a while ago, but just now getting around to it) ~
I put it in place, put the steering wheel back and ... no improvement. I'm inclined to believe that there really is a clip missing. Not that I didn't believe you Mark! I was just hoping to avoid an additional purchase. I'm going to order the clip now and when it arrives will post with results. Gripping stuff, I know. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

if you can wait a day, i can take some pix tomorrow ...
There's a clip that goes over the shaft on the hub. The spring goes onto that clip. Then both slide into the bearing on the column providing a schnugg fit ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif) Andy |

QUOTE Got the spring from Sierra Madre (a while ago, but just now getting around to it) ~ wow , That is a great deal. Here is pictures of -6 column that had no play , The ring I think Andy is talking about, is the flange behind the spline that the wheel actually tighens against. ( BTW I could not get the race out with a magnet either, must be when thay are broke ,they come out.) When the wheel is installed, How much gap is there between the wheel and the shroud ? Well, it IS a steering wheel thread. Ah ah ahhhhh.... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) if you can wait a day, i can take some pix tomorrow ... That'd be great, the more the better Andy. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/chowtime.gif) $200 bearing? List price is around 20 bucks. The Cap'n Negative Cap'n, that must be with some special Krusty discount. Please double-check, pn 914-347-711-00. Ice cold 6-pack if you can find it retail for less than $159 (an excellent deal I came across today). The wheel needs to go into the bearing , your shaft looks pulled out to far , check the lower bearing and snap ring #3 in post #8 If this is true then something's definitely amiss. I'll take another look. I did end up ordering the clip through my local dealership, should have it mid next week. |
