The factory put a wax type paper on the panels themselves and glued a
dbl layer plastic sheet over the door frame. Pics anyone? Where do you get the wax paper? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

74 Sorry, can't help with that MY. FWIW, my '70 had no wax paper, only plastic. For reference, here are the grungy, backsides of the '70 OEM door panels. Attached thumbnail(s) |

...a moisture barrier was used to protect the outboard face of the particle board from absorbing trapped moisture between the polyethelene sheet on the door. Any laminate self-adhesive film will give the same protection. Using just the polyethelene sheeting will still allow the base material of the door panel to absorb moisture and deteriorate.
BEMIS manufactures self adhesive laminate films that can be applied to the outboard face (surface facing the interior of the door) and cut to size by hand. Cover the whole surface, from under the top pad to the bottom, and from side to side and wrap over the edges under the panel cover. Moisture comes in between the bottom of the door and the door threshold and can wick through the exposed edges. I live in Florida, in the summer it rains, or I should say, it rains buckets not drops. Don't use Spray adhesives, they attack the old dry conglomerant composition of the original material. (Look at what happened to the back panel base material when exposed to water leaks from a poorly sealed rear window). ...hope this helps |

the factory plastic sheet has a second piece seem sealed to it that diverts moisture back into the door.

Last time I took my door panels off I threw that stuff away, deeming it to be redundant. Now I understand. Gotta have it! Pat |

the factory plastic sheet has a second piece seem sealed to it that diverts moisture back into the door. Jeff (or Anyone) do you still have a door with that dbl layer sheet still intact? Id like to replicated it. Ive already cut a new single layer plastic sheet. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) |

Wellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll...In my crawl space there was a roll of it there... OR what was left of it.......it is more on the brownish side than the white/brown of the original..But close....I figure it was there from the house being built in 1982... I REALLY tried to find this stuff before I found it.. Folks that I was Crazy??!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/screwy.gif) BUTYOUUSEWHATCHAGOT I guess.. NOW re the clear plastic my 2 Cents.... I went to Hancock Fabrics and got two mils up on the size.... re the original stuff was wayyyyyyyyyy too thin..PLUS no Judge will ever get his Paws in there!!!...Carefullllllly placed 3M contact spray does great for all of the above.... |
