Many years ago, I restored the engine tin & 1.7 air cleaner.
Thought it would be fairly easy to find a vendor supplying a rough rubber-based paint stamp for the engine tin numers, as well as someone to reproduce the air cleaner text. Adter 2 years, I've struck out! Did find one company that could reproduce the air cleaner text in decal format - for 300 bucks! No help on the tin code. So.....am I being anal about these things, or do some of you have other ideas? I saw what Naberhaus had hand-painted on his tin. Too perfect! The engine tin number needs to be rough-stamped & a little sloppy. The air cleaner script needs to be highly detailed. Anyone else dealt with this/these? Pat |

Pat Maybe try hand painting or penciling onto a piece of wood, then wittle the wood down to make a stamp. you could add as many imperfections in the stamp as you wanted to achieve the sloppy look. Pat, I have done the engine tin numbers. I had a rubber stamp made, used white enamel paint...smushed it on like hans would have done in Osnabrueck and the results are excellent. Two stamps $35. I would send you my stamp, but my numbers are different than you need.
On the air cleaner label, your best bet is to keep looking for a nice original, unless George has new labels. |

What air cleaner label? Which engines/years had it, and what did it say?

Jeff, where did you have a stamp made? Any houses I've checked in my area look at me like a doe in headlights! I HAVE a pristine air cleaner top, but ii's so glopped up (filter) that I doubt that it can be cleaned internally. Suggestions? Pat |

What air cleaner label? Which engines/years had it, and what did it say? Jim, The oill bath aircleaners (70-72) had a script embossed on them, noting the fill levels & maintenance. Not certain about post '72. I'll try to post a pic of the script, but it's 34 degrees in the garage & not sure how my camera will deal with it. Pat |

.... where did you have a stamp made?" Pat, try a HOBBY LOBBY, look at all the stencils they have, splice together what you need, place it on your engine tin and then lightly dab over the stencil with a small, clean make-up sponge that you can get from CVS or Walgreens. "Any houses I've checked in my area look at me like a doe in headlights!" Pat, EVERYBODY looks at you that way, that's just your countenance shining through. Paul Pat |

I would not do it that way, it will look odd.
Any decent stationery store should sell custom rubber stamps. You provide the artwork, in this case it is just a tracing, or black/white drawing you make with a black felt pen on paper. They cast the rubber stamp as an exact 100% sized image of your artwork so be sure the art is good. Then you get some white enamel model paint and brush the paint onto the rubber stamp and then place it firmly onto the tin. Do not make try for perfection because thats how they did it originally. Clean up the stamp with solvent for re-use. Super easy. .... where did you have a stamp made?"
