Hi all, is there a data base to trace a 914's history using the vin?

History through the state vehicle registration office. If it has ever been tagged or titled in your state, then they will have records as far back as to when the car first came into your state. Then you can get the previous state title and trace it through the next state. You may need a professional title person who is state approved or a dealer to do this.
Secondly you can get from Porsche a certificate of authenticity (coa as people call it) to find out when the car was made, the equipment, and to what dealer it was delivered.
Then put the two together and you have a complete history!
