Hi all you 914 world members! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I'm a new member, but I've been surfing this site for research purposes.

I am looking at a 74 1.8 914, yellow in color. (happens to be my favorite color) It needs a little love. No, more than a little. Here's a list as best as what I could come up with by looking at the car in person.

Ignition switch/key, it won't start cuz the guy lost the key

Battery tray rusted out and replaced with some angle iron. kind of a hack job.

Rear of the floor pan is rusted out

Trunk floor rusted out.

The driver's left rear quarter is bent up under itself between the wheel well and the bumper.

It could use some body work, but really not a whole lot

The bumpers are kinda nasty

Seats are ripped, carpet is out.

The car is a complete car

It has 2.0L wheels on it, and the guy has owned it for 7 years or so, and up until last january he was driving it. He is firm at his asking price of 1600 for the car.

Sorry, I know, I know. This thread is worthless without pics. Yes, but all I had was my cell phone camera and I don't even know how to get the pics off of it. Sorry, it's the best i could do. If you want to know about any other specific areas of the car, try to jog my memory, and i will do my best to describe them.

I was wondering if this is a fair price for such a car, and would it be worth it to buy it up. If I did buy it, I would probably sell my other projects and get to work on restoring this bad boy.

Let me know what you think,

Thanks,

Jon

Do you have a budget in mind for a 914? The best rule of thumb is to buy the nicest one you can afford. Unless your very handy with welding, etc., you could easily be into the car that far exceeds it's value.
I seen a couple advertised at dealers up in your area that seem like decent cars. I'll pm you info.

ok, so. it sounds like i should turn and run away from this one? look elsewhere for a nicer one. if anyone has any has anything i could buy for under 3000, let me know.

yeah, when i first saw it i was like, "are you kidding me?" like it was worth a few hundred bucks. the guy sort of thought it was like the awesomest car ever, and talked it up kind of like crazy. if anyone could point me towards a decent driver within my price range, and in or around my area (Grand Rapids, MI), or a good website to find some on, let me know.

thanks,

Jon

Give him your number and make him an offer. Sounds like the parts are there, you just need a tub. Pick one up out here and have it shipped to you. The last tub I got was from San Diego, I payed $250.00 for it and it has very little rust issues. The tubs, other than a few structural and saftey issues, stayed the same. And for the most part, the parts are interchangeable. Just a thought.

As a good friend of mine used to say: "Can't make chicken salad when the only ingredient you have is chicken sh*t!". I'd run away from that one.

And oh, (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.png)

"what doesn't kill ya, makes you stronger!"

jonvo4591, there are cars that pop up all the time, especially if you can shop farther south. it would be worth it to research texas/okla/newmex/az through this site and buy a 1-way plane ticket when you find the right car.

on the other hand, i just saw a great car on the detroit craigslist, it was a repo and it looked friggin' bully for $2600. i couldn't get my brother there in time or else it would have been mine!

make a list of priorities, and don't jump at horsepower... you can build that later. find a good tub with sound electrical and a running engine that leaks as little as possible. you'll tinker with it until all your money is gone. then get more money, tinker and learn some more until that's gone, repeat, repeat...

First of all (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.png)
Second look at the classifieds here and at Pelican Parts. When you find something you like have someone here do a PPI for you. If it is a good car fly out and drive it home. The only thing free about the cars is rust. They all have it and the ones with the least rust come from out here. I like the ones Randal posted but someone needs to look at them.
Good Luck on your 914 adventure. Your going be a sick puppy.

As I understand the economy to be in Grand Rapids, I'm guessing your seller is looking to make every buck he can get. Things are pretty depressed in your neck of the woods and that makes folks try to squeeze every dollor they can. Be careful.

i bought one better tahn the description of yours( although with the same battery tray!) and i am over $25000 now 6 years later and it still dont run. You should put yoru budget at $5000 or so and have a few hundred available for the DAPO issues that WILL pop up , and drive all summer! Hard to find a good chassis in the midwest! (mine came from NM)
good luck!

First (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.png) and second I agree with everyone above about the car. Im new here too and I would do a lot more searching and run from that guy. He obviuosly is looking for someone who knows nothing about what to look for when putting a price on a teener. Thankfully u came here to get all these wonderful teener owners advice on it. Wise choice you made. Keep looking for one, u will find one eventually. The people here are always willing and glad to help. The love of 914's and sometimes the hate of them is huge here. Good luck in finding a 914, I'm still looking for one also. Gotta save some money first. Keep looking man. U know where to go for advice, knowledge, and opinions on the value of these cars now.
