There are all kinds of good deals, on the web, for flights out here. I mean cheap.

And the reason for coming out is that the operational and "rust bucket" difference you'll have getting a better car will save you thousands and thousands after you buy the car.

And getting a member to do a PPI for you can determine whether the car is really worth it.

If the PPI comes out good you could also take a second step, which would be having having a trustworthy mechanic look over the car. Most cities here have someone trustworthy that would be identified by our members to accomplish that for you. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/flag.gif) It would be a small expense, but one that would keep more of your money in your pocket to do fun things, with the car, over time.

I mean what's more fun, buying a set of Fuchs or spending the same or more to fix a big hunk of rust?

Ooh, I see there are many good approaches here.

Also, I love this forum, everyone is so willing and helpful here!

Here's one I've been considering, although I would need to sell a car of mine in order to buy a 914, and also for space reasons. I'm 17 almost 18, and I have 3 cars, and I think I should downsize my stable a little so I don't have cars all over the place at home.

Here is the car

http://grandrapids.craigslist.org/cto/1087287117.html

I could probably go look at it easily some time in the future, but I have to get on selling my SHO. going to post it right now on craigslist. I was hoping to pick a car up for around 3k, that maybe needs a little work like breaks or mechanical work. But if there's a little rust that needs fixing, I'd be willing to do that work too, as I have a job at a body shop where I have access to a lot of tools and materials.

EDIT: Also, this car is pretty close to where I live, so it wouldn't be a huge deal for my dad and I to go check it out

Looks nice from the pics, but you really need to give it a thorough inspection. See if anyone here is local to you and could look at it with you. Don't get blinded by pretty paint, look for rust.

Looks nice. Firewall rust may mean sitting water which likely also means long repair. I agree with getting someone else who knows these cars to walk along with you on a purchase.

Good luck!

Alright, thanks for the input on this one. It would be nice to have some one from around my area to help me check it out.

Anyone want to buy a 1992 Taurus SHO?

Which reminds me, I still have to get to work on that posting...

EDIT: here is the car i'm trying to sell: http://grandrapids.craigslist.org/cto/1092040653.html

Well, I also work for my dad who owns a small independent shop, so we could run it down there to check it over too, but got to sell my SHO first!

also, forgive me if i sound like a total N00B but what does PPI really stand for?

As a good friend of mine used to say: "Can't make chicken salad when the only ingredient you have is chicken sh*t!". I'd run away from that one.

And oh, (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.png)

My first car and DD: 92 Honda Accord DX, automatic (lame)

2nd car, that I sold last summer: 87 firebird formula, that car was slower than crap, 305 TBI was not doing so hot.

3rd car: 83 Mazda RX-7 GSL 5spd, a project that i have not even driven yet, There's no driveshaft, and i have the intake all apart.

And, finally, My 1992 Ford Taurus SHO 5spd, the nicest car i own, and have ever owned for that matter!

ok, here's an update, sorta, I guess.

I've had a few calls on my SHO, but nobody has boned up the 3K I'd like out of it yet (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

I hate to say it but I'd never buy a car that lived up here in the Midwest. The salt kills these cars. I bought a 73 2.0 from around here for parts. It was useless for anything else the rust was so bad. Looking back I wouldn't do it again. I ended up shipping one up from Az. It's about $800 to ship one up here. Best $800 I ever spent.

This seems to be what people say is the best route. I'm gonna need to start working harder then (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I'll probably make a decision as soon as I sell my SHO, but feel free to keep 'em coming!

Hey again members! I know, I'm resurrecting a thread thats just about a year old, but its mine.

I sorta left everyone hanging on this one. So here's where I ended up.

Sold the SHO for 2700, I was happy.
Picked up a '98 Regal GS (this car is quick)
But, no 914.
Instead, I ended up with a 67 VW baja bug. For you curious types, here's my thread on the samba : http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=399697

I'm still in love with 914's though, so maybe I'll get one for the street for my next VW related car purchase (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Just thought I'd give this thread a little resolution. I'll pop in every once in a while to see what's going on in 914 world (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
