When I first bought my 1975 1.8 about 7 months ago it failed Oregon DEQ miserably. The allowable HC's are 300ppm. I was running 775ppm, enough that the tech said he couldn't even get a CO% reading.

Car went into the garage as I waited out the winter.

This week I took it to a local Porsche mechanic who said that he was reading only 80ppm HC and .45% CO. So instead of digging much deeper, I went back to the DEQ. This time I passed (woohoo!) but just barely. Now the HC's are at 281ppm and the CO is at .20%

What gives? How accurate is this kind of testing normally? I could write of the mechanics numbers, but even the state's two tests vary greatly.

Is it possible that my emissions really are changing that much? The car is in desperate need of some maintanence. Is this possibly some sort of intermittent vacuum leak? How big a job is it to replace vacuum lines for this EFi system? The car did surge a little bit at idle when hot, but that only happened occasionally.

Looks like I have lots of good projects for my upcoming Friday furloughs.
