After assessing numerous factors, I decided to convert my '73 2.0 from a turbo configuration back to stock. Pic of the original turbo setup before it was removed.

Other new stuff includes; new points, condensor, spark plugs, cap and Beru wires, oil pressure switch, coil, and numerous seals. I went with stainless steel allen head screws instead of the standard cheese head screws as they were almost the same price. The previous owner had installed allen head screws and I found I really like them....and they look cool!

Engine related interior components there were removed included a cockpit boost control assembly, boost ignition control module and associated wiring, pressure lines for the boost gauge, etc. Removing the boost control was a MAJOR PITA, as access was very limited and required removal of the shifter and shift rod for access. The heater control lever and cables were installed in the original location in place of the boost control. 'While I was at it' items included a new Terry Cable accelerator cable, new clutch cable and new speedo cable.

Another item that was changed was seating. The car had Scheel seats installed. Very high on the cool factor, but not so much on comfort and getting in and out of the car. So, I sourced some very nice original black vinyl basket weave seats to put in their place.

Why did you decide to switch back from a turbo?

I am probably in the minority here, BUT, (IMG:style_emoticons/default/clap56.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/clap23.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumb3d.gif)

While I can appreciate the talent and work associated with making the car a turbo, I just love it when I see one returned to stock too. In this case your car looks to be in beautiful condition and the value of your car probably went up considerably by returning it to stock. Nice clean work.

Thank you for all the nice comments. Rob will respond later tonight. He is out working on his 914, which every guy should do on a sunny day! He has his headphones on and is enjoying himself! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Sorry, the turbo and asociated components are mostly gone. It turns out the Crown Mfg. / Rajay turbo on my 914 was a period correct performance upgrade for Turbo Corvairs. I sold the turbo, the Corvair Turbo aircleaner and the wastegate on a Corvair Forum in about 10 minutes (with numerous backups).

The exhuast plumbing and intercooler went to a Porsche tuner in Atlanta working on a turbo 914 project.

I do still have the J&S Boost Ignition Retard module, a modified 2.0 air plenum and the Crown Mfg. rising rate fuel pressure regulator if anybody is interested.

Why did you decide to switch back from a turbo?

While the car was a blast on boost, several components needed to be reconfigured and/or replaced. Also, parts for the Crown / Rajay turbo on it are hard to source (unless you want to spend aircraft style $$$$$).

One of the main problems was the placement of the throttle body on the intake side of the compressor, per the Crown Mfg. 914 kit. It really needed to go back to the stock location with a proper blow off valve and reference pressure signal for the MPS. As it was, the D-Jet MPS would get confused when it saw boost and would lean out the mixture.

The exhaust plumbing from the turbo to the muffler was thin and perforated in several spots, the turbo flange on the input side of the exhaust turbine housing was warped and leaking, the internal muffler baffles were loose, etc. etc.

I just happened to have a low mileage (but terminally rusted) donor parts car that had almost everything I needed to take it back to stock: a 2.0 FI harness with really nice boots, 2.0 throttle body, 2.0 air cleaner, SS heat exchangers, Bursch muffler, heater flappers and tin components, heater blower, numerous engine tin seals and more.

About your J&S Boost Retard module...I'm restoring my red car that has one of the early Turbo kits manufactured by Maltese Falcon, and I think that it came with a retard module. ( A lot of the ignition parts were sold off before I got it so I'm not completely sure).

how about sending me an email with your asking price. Address is in my profile.

Thanks...

David

If you're interested, PM me with your email address and I'll send you a copy of an old MSDS 914 Turbo Kit brochure I have. Are you sure it's Martin's kit? He told me that he received loads of interest for his 914 turbo kit, but only sold a few of them.

J&S didn't start making boost modules until the early 80's. Martin built his 914 turbo kit in the early 70's, so I doubt he used a J&S module. The J&S module could be used as a 'period correct' upgrade. I'm asking $100 for the J&S module. Please keep in mind that while the J&S module I have controls static and boost timing, it is not an ignition system or a replacement for ignition points. It can be used with points or an aftermarket ignition system like Permatune.

I realize that you were having some problems with the turbo installation, but I was curious how the performance of the stock configuration fuel injected engine compares to the previous turbo configuration? What are the pluses and minuses? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif)
