I have a 1974 2.0. It sat for 3 years after having some electrical problems that caused the Alt wiring harness to melt the insulation completely off !! But even with this wire burnt up the car would start and run but the Alt light on the dash stayed on all the time (even if the key was out of the switch). I replaced the Alt and the wiring but as soon as I hooked the battery up it started to short out and and smoke up the at the Alt. What could this be??

my first guess would be that you've got the battery connected backwards. (black is positive in these things) made the same mistake myself the day i picked mine up. the alternator is grounded even when the ignition is off, so with the battery backwards it burns up. i don't know if the car could actually run with the battery reversed though, so maybe this isn't it. someone else that knows a little more chime in here.

Yep, that's what happens. BTDT. You're car should run until the battery is dead.

Hey Brad still working on this issue.
The problem I'm having is that some people say that the battery could be in wrong but I hooked it up the same way it was when the car would start and run. The only difference is that there is a new Alt and wiring harness (i know the harness is ok so it must be the Alt - RIGHT). But just to make sure let me get this straight - the positive battery terminal is hooked up to the wire that goes to the starter then to the Alt. |

Yes, that's the way it gets hooked up.
Have you looked through the "alternator troubleshooting" tech article over on Pelican's site? There's a ton of info in it... --DD |
