has anyone installed the high flow cone intake filter in place of the factory air filter unit? Was it worth it in performance (daily or track)?

Was it worth it in performance (daily or track)? Not really. But it sounds faster due to increased induction noise ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool_shades.gif) Andy |

Not worth it, but it doesn't really matter either way. So do whatever you want.

I did it, I did a major overhaul of the engine and the big 2.0 airbox is just in the way when you want to fiddle with the engine, I installed a K&N cone filter to have more access to the engine and the plan was to change back to the huge airbox when the engine was tuned.
When the engine was back in the car I drove it without the back window and the engine lid, wow! At 4000 rpm and above its just goes WRRRRRRROOOOOOMMMM (IMG:style_emoticons/default/piratenanner.gif) , the intake is about 2 feet from your right ear and the feel is race-ish, more power? I don't think so! Maybe it revs a little bit more aggressive above 5000 rpm, but with a stock type 4 you don't want to be in that area to much (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) With the window and engine lid (with the raintray) back on the car the soundlevel is acceptable, I still drive with the filter and love the sound of the engine, but don't expect more power ![]() |

I added one to my car. I made my own form Home Depot PVC plumbing pipe. I extended the filter about 18 inches to the driver's side so as to avoid picking up hot air coming off the engine. There is a thread here where someone experimented and found the air to the extreme sides of the engine compartment to be a bit cooler.
I like the filter change. It cleans up the engine compartment and produces a nice sound. Whether there is an increase in power, I don't know. K & N filters do not filter well and require messy re-oiling. I chose an Apexi filter. According to the review below it does a better job of filtering and does not use oil. Oil filter comparison |

I think Yarin's and the others are way" COOL " that factor is priceless! Look that way too ! Of course this comes from a guy that runs K.&N's on my 1.7 with carbs. Heck if I had F.I. i would have those billet alum fuel rails that Auto Motion sells, pressure gauge and all. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) Of course some make a case for me being a little over the top ( nuts) anyway. Just ask my wife!!! I had one on my 2.0 for about 3 months. On the plus side, it made it much easier to work on that side of the motor and to adjust the idle. I went back to the stock airbox a couple months ago. I noticed no decrease in power.
I did, however, notice that the CHTs appeared to be about 15-20 degrees cooler with the stock airbox on. |

Thanks for inputs ----the votes for daily driver-fun car say not worth it--if you are high tech the exotic would work---get a laptop with performance review program and plot/tweak for results.

after looking at the miniture stock air inlet snout and where it draws in HOT restricted air, i was sold on converting it. it cleaned up the engine bay, looked better, gave abit cooler sound and has to breath cooler and better. i think it's worth it. besides you can swap back e.z.
