Please pardon my ignorance. My brother is deaf and internet limited in another state with his cars and I'm posting for him but I don't know what he's really talking about. I find information for him from time to time, that's how it goes. He's restoring a 911 and a 914 and this is big stuff to him and me.

He has a tail shift tranny out of his 914. He needs to install another tranny he has, a side shift tranny. So the transmission going back into the car is a side shift but the car is set up for a tail shift.

- - - What does he need to adapt the car to the new tranny?

- - - Are there conversion kits for installing side shift trannies? Where do I go for those?

- - - Which threads on this site are helpful? (I used search, but don't know what I'm really looking for.)

I PM'ed Mr. Evil who seems like a go-to guy.

Thanks everybody.

For a side shift tranny install into a tail shift car...

You will need.
The tranny
the shifter rods from the tranny to the shifter.
The side shift shifter
New bushings.
A tail shift/side shift adapter bushing for the firewall bushing
A side shifter engine support bar and the outer mounts.
The engine mounts for the side shifter
New rubber engine mounts for the new bar and new brackets.

There is no "kit" you can buy, you need to find all the hard parts used.
You can still buy all the bushings and the motor mount rubber.

Great list, I'd point out a couple things: You can get away with not using the conversion bushing, my 914 had a copper sleeve around the shifter for a while until I accidentally ran across a conversion bushing. Also, there may be serviceable bushings on his setup. IIRC there's one in the shifter, but not outside of it, up front; the firewall bushing, which you noted; and the bronze looking one at the tranny.

The sideshift conversion is well worth the time. Not only do you actually get to pick the gears you go into, the engine mount design is smarter.

Can anyone direct me to photos of Side Shift parts or Side Shift Installations? The replies are most helpful. Seeing what is involved as well as the list of parts would be great.

Thanks,
