Full Version: Trans fill plug sealant?

What is your favorite sealant for the trans fill plug?
After Dr. E's gearstack rebuild and subsequent re-fill with Swepco I installed a new fill plug. I kept the original magnet drain plug and sealed it with Permetex pipe thread sealant - no problems there. But on the fill plug I was hesitant to put any sealant and wanted to see if it would seal without. It didn't and I've had a very slow leak ever since!

Teflon tape seals well, but difficult to get the right torque on the threads and difficult to clean it all out if the plug ever has to come back out.
Use the Permetex sealant? It seems to harded up might also be difficult to clean up when the plug comes back out?

Teflon pipe thread sealant. Comes in a tube and does not get hard.

I've never used any. It's a pipe thread, tapered, self-sealing.

Oh, I tried Swepco once ... my boxes have 90w in them.

Yep - tried that, but I guess some "weeping" might be considered normal.

I'll give the teflon tube sealant a try.

Thanks!

Nope ...
Maybe the thread has some dirt/grime on it? idea.gif

I have never used any sealant and never had any problems with oil seeping out.

I always spray brake cleaner on the threads on both the plug and the hole to make sure they're clean.

Those plugs can be annoying to remove even without any sealant on them. They are tapered threads, so they "shouldn't" need any sealant either. Just clean 'em up and thread 'em in. Maybe a little anti-seize?
