Has anyone on the board removed their 914's fenders without destroying them? What is the procedure and possible pitfalls I need to watch for? We don't have parts cars all over the country here, so they are valuable to us.

You have to drill out the spot welds, split the seam and do some cutting. There is no easy way. If your cutting a parts car you'll want to cut more than you would need for a repair. Here's a picture of my front passenger fender drilled out at the spot welds and cut near the cowl.
If your chopping up a parts car you might want to quarter the car up to be sure you have everything you would need for a repair on any corner of the car.

remove the undercoating near the passenger compartment and you will see the other seams that need to be removed.
there is a simple flange that holds the fender vertically...just cut that flange off the car.
Then you can drill the spot welds out once it is off the car, and weld a new L shaped flange back on the inner fender.
Clean all the undercoating and seam sealer out....you will see what holds it....its not that hard.
