I live in a cold climate.
I have a gasless welder....no issues at any temp.
I have been considering buying a gas mig welder so I can save on all the grinding.
Can you store the gas in sub freezing temps?
If not...
Is it safe to store in the same room as an oil fired furnace? (think open flame)

The gas is usually C02/argon. C02 is what you exhale and argon is an inert gas so I don't see a problem in either cold weather or in a room with an oil furnace. Weather in Paso Robles gets down to freezing at night sometimes and my MIG welder is stored in the garage. It's in the same room as the furnace is. No worries. Cold shouldn't hurt and neither gas will burn. The gas is only there to shield the weld from oxygen.

Absolutely, it won't be a problem at all, and I predict that the very first thing you'll do will be show your buddies what great welds you're making.

The place I get my gas at stores all their gasses in an unheated building.

Central Welding here has their entire yard of tanks outside. Never a problem. Go for it, you will be glad you did!
