Full Version: OT: Finally got around to building my cut-a-way motor

After 4 years of putting this off, I finally decided to get off my bum and put together my T-1 DP cut-a-way motor. My reason for building it is so that I can show clients who come into my shop what is wrong with their motor and that way they can better visualize the problems. It's really easy for a mechanic to completely loose a client when trying to explain the issues with their motor. The worst thing I see is that "deer in the headlights" glaze come over someone's face when explaining a problem. I'm hoping this will help. . .

Okay, I'm not a T1 guy...

What is the second thingy next the Dizzy?
The T1 cam lobes and pushrods seem really small.

Thats cool. I did a 4 cyl deisel cut away back in high school, we had a trade school 4,5,6, period off campus. It was for those of us that knew we weren't going to college. Thats when machining was fun. Glad i got out of making chips.

But does it leak oil? I mean "mark it's spot"???

Nope, not a drop (surprising I know shades.gif ) It does have really low compression though. . .

It's kind of interesting, when you turn the motor, the lifters spin in their bores just like they should even at super slow hand cranking speeds.

The short cam lobes on T-1 motors fare MUCH better over time than the lobes on our 914 motors.

Very cool. If you ever take video of it, be sure and share a link. smile.gif

Nice job, that took a lot of time. I forgot how the pump pushrod relationship was. I've never had a aircooled vw motor that didn't mark it's spot. It's like harleys, if it doesn't mark it's spot, it's out of oil.
